“Well if you wanted to be a star be a pale faced young English teacher in Taiwan. Money for nothing and the sex is free…even if sometimes you are in dire straits.”
I’d consider US$23/hr pretty good money. Especially here as cost of living is on the lower end. That’s almost 50,000/year. I doubt teachers in the States make that.
Theoretically…
$23/hr x 4.5 hrs (most cram schools have classes between 4pm and 9pm) x 5days x 4 weeks x 12 months isn’t even close to 50g/year.
You’d be lucky to fill a 40 hour week with classes unless you’re real schooled up or you’re doing illegal snotnose work.
I can see why “Stephen” was trying to get kicked out of the country. He’s ABC, which makes finding teaching gigs a chore, and he’s not living up to his earning potential.
That’s actually more than I expected. I’ve been here long enough that I’m out of the loop on US salaries. Just always read headlines/protests about how underpaid teachers are.
I’ve never been a teacher and was just basing it off a 40-hour work week (2080 hr/year). I only know a couple of friends here who were teachers and they were both making close to 100,000 NT/month, which is more than I am making so I thought teachers had it pretty good. Just not much potential to move up or advance career-wise.
