So I was walking through a 24hour store a couple of days ago, looking for some cat food for my cat… I pulled out my usual bag of kibble, when this bag of what appeared to be dog food caught my eye… After several double-takes and some eye-rubbing, I had to pull out the trusted Nokia phone and snap this picture…
I’m not even really sure what to say about this, other than that this has got to be the funniest lost in translation moment so far for me…

I saw a new Government ad in the MRT yesterday. It said, “Want to take a bite? Welcome you a pirate.”
I think it was about intellectual property.
I consulted my Taiwanese wife who looked up jiz in her english chinese dictionary. They give two meanings in Chinese for the english word jiz; jiz as in cum and jiz meaning “energy”. I would presume that is how this brand of dog food came to be called Dog Jiz.
Great name. You gotta hand it to the local folks.

It’s a fake! Sorry, I don’t buy it. Despite an attempt at bending and shadowing the new lettering, it’s crisper, cleaner and higher res than the background image; just comare to the zonghe at the upper right. Plus, there’s no rational basis in typical misromanization for this ‘jism’ word.

I was wondering if/when someone might try and call me on this one… Dragonbones, I assure you, it’s not a fake… the reason why the some of the lettering is fuzzy and some seems clearer is because i took the picture with my Nokia 6230… but regardless, it is bag of dog food… the next time you’re in a 24h store, check it out for yourself…
And Dragonbones, I told you a “basis” for it. My wife checked the biggest (in terms of physical size, as I stare at it it has to be six inches thick and I remember dragging it home, gotta be 5lbs.) English Chinese dictionary around (it is the Tung Hua publishing company one) and it defines jisim in chinese as “energy”…so you get Dog Energy brand dog food.
The bigger question that I always have about these things is was it done in complete ignornance or…done for a laugh by some demented soul.

You’re looking at it the wrong way - it’s not a romanization, it’s a translation, and “jisim” was a typo. You do know that “jism” is actually an English word, right?
That part I did get
