The Taiwan spirit is more of a rebellious non compliance.
But, I see young people today too willing to comply.
Baxter, how long have you been here?
Have you checked out the local corny Taiwanese movies of the late nineties?
There were a string of comedy movies with military themes poking fun of the clash of Taiwanese/Chinese cultures. They were nostalgia pictures.
They starred a fat cute Budhia looking child actor who we lovingly called Fat Boy. The movies were all over TV and we enjoyed watching them.
This was before affordable internet and all corny Chinese movies were subtitled in English.
I can’t seem to find the name of the actor or the movies now
Can someone help me?
You know how the only English words we’d say in the Cram School back in the day was “No Chinese?”
Well, they were like that with Taiwanese.
In the movies, students would be punished for using Taiwanese. Actually happened to my Father in Law.
Now…to present day… You’ll find this amusing
My local vegetarian restaurant guy in our village will only tell me the price of my meal in Taiwanese and won’t give me my change until I tell him the amount in Taiwanese.
@joshipop: are you having trouble following the conversation? seems a little early for beer o’clock -again- here in taiwan but not my place to judge how people spend their weekends!
Lots of gay folks in the army. I knew a staff sargeant who really had this weird desire to touch other men’s nipples. I think he got in trouble afterwards. It was in the news. While it did not say who was involved I think I know who it was.
