Thinking of moving to Libya

Random thought #237

I’m planning to leave Taiwan in a little over a year, but have no idea where to go next.

Libya is close to Europe, warm and sunny, and might offer all sorts of interesting opportunities as it worms its way back into the international community.

Or not?

What do you think?

why not the south of Spain, Benalmadena http://www.benalmadena.com/ great marina and good sailing, could cross over to Marocco in half a day and that’s next to Libya, right.

Good money if you can get work teaching or doing other assorted jobs for various international oil companies. I don’t think it would be a great place to go for a single man or woman, although I’ve heard the compound parties can get pretty rowdy and there is a lot of horny nurses at the international hospitals.

If your married or have a SO, I think it would be an interesting experience. However, I would much prefer working in Dubai than Saudi or Libya. More jobs, excellent infastructure, great nightlife, and close to Asia, as well as Europe. After Asia, I think you would find Libya a little staid.

Ivory Coast looks interesting at the moment or perhaps Zimbabwe, Tristan de Cunha has always sounded terribly exotic but I think the majority of inhabitants have an inherited genetic disorder. I know…Bangladesh - you would probably end up as the nation’s cricket captain!

By all means move to Libya! You’ll love it!!!

In all seriousness, I would recommend the Canary Islands. They are in the Atlantic Ocean, and under the administration of Spain.

I visited there about thirty years ago, when I was doing a year off from college, and really thought they would be worth another visit some day. Although I did make it to the Spanish mainland about six years later, I never got back to the Canary Islands.

In retrospect, I enjoyed the islands much more than I did the Spanish mainland.

I was in Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria, and if I had a chance to go back I would want to check out the other islands too.

The canaries???

My mothers uncle lived there for some 30 years, right in the middle of Las Palmas.

He saw the islands change from a piece of heaven to a tourist trap of the most overrun sort.

Wannea jostle with German tourists blocking off all sun chairs with towels?

Want to see drunk scandinavian teens throw up all over the place?

Well, in that case you are choosing the right place.

You mean, you want to move to the …

Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya?

Really?

What

It was not him coming and going - he stayed there and saw that hotels shot up wverywhere and that the stream of tourists turned into a torrent.

I would say that for living in a nice climate at a low price, then morocco, parts of portugal, croatia, and perhaps parts of turkey may also be worth a thought.

However, if he’s into the move to make money, then I would say Taiwan or Dubai.

Right. I was just saying that places change a lot over time. Sometimes so much as to be barely recognizable.

Do you really think that Taiwan is at the top of the “money” ladder in EFL?

And could someone teaching English make enough money to live in Dubai?

Oh, my grandpa lived in Libya for about 5 years in the late 60s and early 70s…worked for Esso managing a few oil fields…he LOVED IT and I don’t just mean the money. He absolutely loved it. Stole a piece of his heart…my grandma hated it there, though. So my grandpa had to leave because of her.// If you are married or have a SO (who is not Libyan) then she might hate it.

my parents went to the azores recently and couldn’t stop talking about it. lush, people super friendly

The Lebanon can be nice, I’m told. Bit of skiing in the mountains then down to the beach. I met a Syrian couple who loved going there for their holidays.

I’ve been to Spain and the Canaries. No thank you, not again.

And no more bloody EFL thank you. I’m moving simply because it will be time to move on, and a change of career is also essential.

Libya’s just opening up. There must be all sorts of opportunities. And jolly nice it is too, by all accounts. (I like desertes, and salt water.)

I heard someone a few posts back mention Zimbabwe as a potential destination… :astonished: :help:

Whatever you do, stay AWAY from Zimbabwe - the country is currently being run into the ground by a madman dictator who belongs in a straightjacket.

It was me but I was attempting to be witty… Zimbabwe is a very sad place.
