Hey, it’s my understanding that foreigners must have arranged tours when traveling in Tibet, so I’m looking to find some people who are interested in the same things I am. I’m hoping to do a good amount of trekking and camping, I definitely want to go to Everest Base Camp, and of course I want to see Buddhist sites. I’d also like to experience some of the nomadic culture. I haven’t yet started researching this thoroughly, but I wanted to build a group soon so the tour can be booked. Post here or message me if you’re interested.
Good luck. I’ve been a few times and you’re more likely to get people onboard if you give a clear itinerary first. Also, it’s going to be hard to do a lot of trekking with a group as people’s interests will vary and it’s tough to arrange more than one trek at a time. Set realistic goals as it takes a lot of time and money to get around and delays because of altitude sickness are common.
The most popular routes are from Lhasa down the Friendship Highway to Nepal (with a stop at EBC) or across western tibet to do the 3-day kora around Mt Kailash (can also include EBC). Other treks and visits can be arranged in Lhasa so you may want to consider more than one tour.
I went to Tibet during Chinese New Year’s. It was cold. I would like to do the eastern loop some time in the future. But that involves sleeping in monestaries.
sleeping in monasteries sounds bomb. i don’t know anything about any of the routes, but i’ll definitely be looking in to that.
oh, and to clarify (perhaps) part of my reason for posting before i have a clear idea of what i want to do is to find a group so we can figure out what we want together. that seems to me to be an easier way to make sure everyone has the trip they want. but your advice is appreciated, mucha man. i’m beginning research now, so doubtless i’ll soon have a clearer itinerary.
No problem. You should also post your request on Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree, or look there for other like-minded travellers.
This fellow Phuntsok was my guide about two years ago. I highly recommend him: tenzinintibet2005@yahoo.com
Don’t know if the email still works though.

I had a tour guide with the same name in February.
Here is a new book on Tibet if anyone is interested!
