Those dogs are only for people who have experience with large, powerful, willful dogs. Novices would just be asking for trouble.
We saw a couple with 2 Afghani hounds at SYS the other day. I must say they looked very well kept and very active. On tight leashes and their masters were both sporty strong people. We spent a few mins with the dogs and awed by how majestic they were.
Although I wonder what they did to that hair in the summers? 
One of the drunk mechanics down by the most horrible side of Xindian has one of those in a small cage. sigh
