Sorry if this has come up before but I’m not really slick rick with the search function.

Can you buy plane tickets to Mainland China from here? I looked at a couple of websites (including the company I got my tix here from) and couldn’t find anything but flights to Hong Kong. I want to fly to Beijing. Is this one of those Taiwan/China things? Do I have to fly to hong kong? Did I just not look enough, or what?

Does anybody know much about getting visas?

Yes, I’m flying to Beijing tomorrow, and it seems you have to go through Hong Kong. The travel agent will organize your visa, but your passport needs to be sent to Hong Kong (apparently) so allow at least 7 days for the visa to arrive. I think it’s about NT$2000 for the visa, but that might be different for each applicant depending on which country you’re from.

Fred, not sure about costs, but you can also fly to BeiJing via Seoul, depending on connection times this can also make the journey time a little less. This is the way i normally go.

As for Visa, then i believe the recent changes for US citizens wanting China visas means that you have to go in person to apply and cannot do it through the normal visa channels.

You can also route through Japan, or Macao.

If you’re a US citizen, the local agent in Taiwan will send your passport to the US for 2 weeks for visa processing. The charge for a 1 mth visa is 3900 NT. You’ll want an agent like Interlink that handles a lot of foreign customers. This way is a tad more $$$ than getting your visa in HK, but at least you’ll know you have a legit visa before paying for your plane ticket. I think it’s worth the extra money.

As to cost, you’re looking at 15-20,000 NT round trip at this time of year. Rates go up and down, of course.

The fastest routes are definitely through Macao and HK. North Asia routes will be much slower, and the total trip may take 12-16 hours.

Gubo, the North Asian routes do not take 12-16 hours, dont know where you got that info from, it is complete bollocks.

Sorry, but it is true. Keinen bollocksen.

I personally flew back and forth to Beijing through Japan. The flight back, including stop-over, was around 15 hours. You can call Northwest to verify.
