Time running out for italy

Militants claiming to have kidnapped an Italian journalist in Iraq have issued a final warning on a website.

They say Italy must withdraw all its soldiers from Iraq by today.

But they have not made any specific threats to kill 56-year-old Giuliana Sgrena, who was kidnapped on Friday by gunmen.

Ms Sgrena is a veteran reporter for the communist daily Il Manifesto.

A group calling itself the Islamic Jihad Organisation has claimed to have kidnapped her, giving Italy 72 hours to withdraw its troops from Iraq.

Its statement said: “We consider this as the last message to the Italian government… that here will be no security or stability as long as there is one Italian soldier in the land of Iraq.”

But the journalist’s colleagues pointed to her anti-American stance, saying that holding her would damage the image of Iraq.

She had been working outside a university in the capital, Baghdad, when the militants captured her."
