Top 5 Cities in the World

Just curious as to where people have traveled and to what cities they most enjoyed. Although I’m by no means the world’s most well traveled individual, I have seen a fair bit and my top five would go:

Best cities (based purely on my having a good time and enjoying the people and touristic sights).

  1. Quebec City
  2. Prague
  3. Lyon
  4. Hong kong
  5. Reykjavik (Iceland) / Leuven (Belgium)

While I certainly enjoy London, New York, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Amsterdam, I think the above are my absolute favorites.

The award for the most polluted, least benign, frustrating and clogged city goes to:

  1. Manila.

Shopping: Hong Kong
Nightlife: London
To live: Paris
To raise a family: Singapore, Andorra

Quebec
San Diego
Chang Mai
New York/Chicago (my heart belongs to Chi-town, but NY is just too cool)
Munich

Damn, I need to travel more! I also have to drop my hat to Montreal and Boston…both very entertaining.

Sydney - just beautiful
Kuala Lumpur - cheap, modern
Tallin - love the old town
Bangkok - well …

Avoid:
Manila
Taipei

San Diego -sun, surf, taquitos
Basel - Art, carnivals, trade, 3 countries in one city
Lyon - Great party town
San Francisco - A treat
Taipei - well, y’all know

Chou

Hanoi - surprised no one else has mentioned it.
Sydney - I’ll be quaffing beers at the Bondi Icebergs on Sunday arvo.
Pondicherry - fond memories, madness and fever.
Bangkok - erh, fondle mammaries (joking).
Paris - more fond memories.

HG

Capetown - The sea air, the food, the shopping
Las Vegas - The gambling, the silly shows, the fact you can carry your drink everywhere
Bangkok - The food, partying and cheap massages
Hong Kong - never ceases to amaze me each time I visit
Savannah - a little too touristy now, but you really do bump into everything in “the Book”

Rome
San Francisco
Singapore
Taipei
New York

London
Hanoi
Dublin
Shanghai
KL

in no particular order:
Cape Town - sun, sea, mountains, wine, food
Hanoi - Asia with a European touch
Paris - markets, cafes, brasseries and France on your doorstep
Copenhagen - Danes, winters, jazz
and then torn between the beauty of Sydney and the sheer sleaze of Bangkok.

New York
Paris
Hong Kong
Lisbon
Bangkok

New York
Gstaad
Budapest
Toronto
Taipei

Worst Place? Easy - Manila. There MUST be some nice parts of Manila, but I always see grime, urban decay, crushing poverty, corruption, pollution, and traffice jams. However, the islands are so beautiful that one can almost forgive the Philippines for having such a God-forsaken capitol.

Amsterdam
Bangkok
Chiang Mai
San Francisco
Singapore
Vancouver

and Hsinchu (ya right)

I am not a “city person”. So here are my fav countries…

Thailand- the food and beaches
Bali- the pace of life
Israel- the electricity in the air

St. Petersburg (Russia)
Quebec
Tallin
Lubek
Taipei

Keelung
Taipei
Ilan
Hualien
Taitung
Keelung

Prague
Florence
Amsterdam
Caracas
Kunming
San Francisco
Charleston, SC
Rome
Medellin
Buenos Aires
New Orleans

The more flora and/or architecture, the better.

Hong Kong
Budapest / Amsterdam
Edinburgh / Glasgow
Singapore
Taipei

Whistler, BC.
NYC
At. Anne De Beaupre (30 minutes east of Quebec City)
Tokyo (How can it be so clean???)

and one I haven’t been to, but is next on my big city hitlist;

Singapore

Didn’t like Bangkok much.
