Top five things to do in Taichung

For those of you who live in Taichung, or have lived here. What are the top five things to see or do? (Keep it constructive please)

If we get some useful top 5 lists I might turn it into a poll to get some consensus.

Fengjia Night Market
Science Museum
Day trip to Lugang

That’s three.

Wuqi fish market is pretty interesting.

Depends what you like to do. Lot of nice parks:

Metropolitan Park
People’s Park walkway
Feng Le Statue Park
Taichung Park
Wenxin Forest Park

Art Museum
New City Hall Square
Yi Zhong Street

Man! You guys just have it ALL in Taichung! I’m envious.

Botanical Garden (near Science Museum)
Le Cheng Matsu Temple (lech.org.tw/)

People are struggling to come up with five. Im glad I didn’t try and suggest top ten! (:

Only been here for a short time, so far my suggestions would be:

  1. Yizhong jie (Yizhong street)
  2. Fengjia night market
  3. “Burger Joint” (Behind sogo, ill find the address later)

Taichung is one of the top five places to base out of for doing other things in other places.

Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Dakun scenic area
  2. The Refuge
  3. Wen Xin night market
  4. Yi Zhong jie night market
  5. Tai Zhong harbour
  6. Feng Jia night market
  7. Tai zhong park
  8. First square
  9. Stock 20 / train station area
  10. Art street and Metro Park
  11. Little Europe- variety of food
  12. Jade market

Get stoned.

And you can always hop on a bus and head north or south. Me and my mates rented a bus one Saturday for a Ministry of Sound party in Taipei.

Dakeng’s nice, nice way to spend a day in the mountains…

The cross island highway, chiayi , nantou and miaoli are not far from Taichung. The city itself is not big for tourist stuff but the museums and fengjia night market are particularly fun. A lot of other stuff is pretty mediocre like the art street and soho little europe area.

yes, depends what you want.

emerge live house
Lin Mansions in Wufeng (not sure if it is open for the public yet)
Mazu temple in Dajia
Lugang

and more central:
old beer factory behind the railway station
the whole area between the railway station and Wuquan Rd. is kinda cool, because it has been neglected by urban planning
Taizhong First Junior High school area (台中一中)

and the opera house once it is ready.

What makes Tai zhong great is the community, so many wonderful humans pulling together for fun, justice, help, etc. Loads of community events happening all the time.

Totally ditto whitetiger.

Here’s another must-see:
My new office / shop near the Eslite! :+)

And seriously, let’s not forget the many art spaces all over the city.

What kind of office/shop is that?

It’s an office first and foremost for the publishing company, but we’ll also dedicate space to books and art. We’re still getting things squared away, but we’ll sell/rent books and magazines (imported) and also host art, wine, and book events.

I’ll post more in a few weeks after we’ve gotten further into furnishing and stocking the place. I was just really excited and wanted to add it to the must-do list for Taichung.

So is Emerge Taichung’s last surviving live music venue?

I’ve heard Taichung’s nightlife is pretty dire these days. I still miss the Soundgarden, when I could pop across the road to the Piggy and Lion King for a bit, and wrap up the night (at 6am) with mates at the Soundy - ah, the good ol’ days…

Sounds nice.

Maybe it indeed is, keeping a low profile at the moment though. Saturday afternoon 16:00 there will be a band from Germany and one from Taichung. Probably only until 18 or 19.

I agree with this … I arrived in Taichung 14 years ago and lived there for 10 years before relocating.

yes indeed " the good ole dazs" and I survive!!!
