Rather than an intelligent discussion of why you agree or dis-agree with this group of books and the reasoning behind it, you preface it with being a result of “…right-wing nut jobs.”
I fully expect someone to post that the Bible should be added to the list. Does that make them a “left wing nut job?”
How about adding the Qu’ran?
Oh well…maybe this will be moved to IP.
Oh yeah…I blame George W. Bush for this list…mmm’kaaay.
There is a list of the right-wing nutjobs on that page, and look who’s at the bottom. Would he like to comment on this ?
I think calling science ‘dangerous’ makes you a nutjob.
That is truly bizarre. Definitely nut-jobs. The Kinsey report – oh no orgasms. Also, did you see some of the books that received honorable mentions on their list:
Origin of the Species - Darwin
On Liberty - JS mill
Unsafe at any Speed - Nader
Silent Spring - Carson
If it were up to the “judges,” surely all undesirable books would be removed from libraries, and burned by the state.
I do think it’s an interesting idea, though to come up with such a list, and not all their choices are so wacky, such as the first three:The Communist Manifesto, Mein Kampf, Quotations from Chairman Mao. But I’d rather the scope was 2,000 years, not 200, so it could include the Bible and the Koran.

The communist manifesto sure clarified a lot of things for me. I consider it one of the most important books I have ever read. It isn’t gospel and was written in a very different age by two idealistic young people, of course, but it points to facts of human nature that are as true now as ever.
Ah, but the topic says, “…of the past 200 years”. The Bible goes back further than 200 years. Perhaps particular translations of the same could count. Nah!
Well, the Book of Mormon is less than 200 years old…
Dianetics and the rest of L. Ron Hubbard’s books should be on the list, too. And whatever books inspired the Christian Scientists. And the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Those religions are all less than 200 years old.
The book that inspired modern Islamism is on the Washington Monthly list.

Remember. Books don’t kill people. People kill people with big heavy books.[/quote]
If the list was selected by right-wing nutjobs, why is Mein Kampf in the list? Perhaps it’s included for the sake of plausible deniability…

Hey, we did say “nut jobs” did we not? Surely that allows a few… anachronistic additions to the list!
