What’s the town/city/state/county/province motto where you are from? Is it appropriate or catchy, or is it cryptic, banal, or insipid? Last place I lived in the West was Colchester, UK " Britain’s Oldest recorded town". In Vermont, I lived near Vergennes, “America’s smallest city”. If you could think of a motto for the town or city where you live in Taiwan, what would it be?
Norwich is : A fine city.
Detroit is: A lovely city. (Put your hands up.)
been there: agreed ![]()
Banchiao: It’s close enough to Taipei for government work.
I was living in Baltimore up till recently. Their current Motto is “BELIEVE”
I don’t think any of us can believe in that city- lol
If you’re walking downtown at night and get shot in the arm u will not find it hard to ‘BELIEVE’ that.
Long Beach- "Better be born on the right side of town Sucka’ "
Queensland: Beautiful one day, Perfect the next.
…and its true. During winter, its 20 degrees and blue skies almost every single day.
Manchester: heeeeeeeeeeeyaahhhhhhh mate!
Klamath Falls: Oregon’s City of Sunshine
Tainan: Sidewalks are for pussies.
Seriously though,
Tainan: Home of tradition, or Historical (monument) Paradise.
Tainan: Little Amsterdam (because of the old Dutch fort and occupation).
Once again, less seriously,
Tainan: Sleepy Hollow.
Greyo: Dylan Thomas called Swansea “an ugly, lovely town”.
Terry: I’d call it… a Pretty Shitty City.
Greyo: Dylan Thomas didn’t do as much fucking cocaine as you, did he?
(Edit: No-one was gonna get the reference)
My hometown. Pretoria, South Africa: The Jacaranda City (because of all the Jacaranda trees, of course).
Johannesburg, South Africa: The City of Gold (The city is called Egoli in Zulu, which means place of gold. The province is officially called Gauteng, a Sotho name that means place of gold. The car registration numbers end with GP, so because of the high crime rate in Johannesburg it is also infamously known as Gangsta’s Paradise). Go see the South African movie “Tsotsi” currently on circuit in Taiwan to get a better understanding of why it’s called Gangsta’s Paradise. Good movie too, not too much English though as they mostly speak “Tsotsi taal” (gangster language) which is a loose mix of Bantu languages, Afrikaans and English.
Kimberly, South Africa: The City of Diamonds (well, because of all the diamonds
).
Port Elizabeth, South Africa: The Friendly City (named after Queen Elizabeth I, I believe).
East London, South Africa: The Windy City (which is a “motto” shared with Chicago, Il I believe?). Named after…well…London. The East of London, that is…
Chicago: Used to be- My kind of Town (after the Sintra song) . But Ironman would highly disagree
Now it’s “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden).

I got it. Smashing film, especially if you’ve ever spent much time there. My gran lives in Mumbles, these days.

“Packinghouse to the World” “The City that Can”…etc.

Actually the one that sticks is “The Windy City”
to Chicagoans “Two seasons - winter and construction”
Yes. It loses some of its magic on people who have never been to Wales, because they can’t bring themselves to believe it really is all exactly like that.
Guelph, Ontario: The Royal City
Taipei: Beats a Swift Kick to the Groin!
