Tracert

Anyone willing to dumb this down for me?

I’m using ICDsoft.com in HK for hosting and have never had a problem in more than 2 years. Today, I’m having trouble viewing the site and using my control panel. They told me to send them the results when I do this tracert whatchamacallit.

Thing is there are 18 lines of data on my results. Is that unusual???

No. About 10 of those hops will be here in Taiwan. Install VisualRoute for a good look at what’s going on.

Packets are all going via China, which is what’s slowing things down.

Basically, the number of hops (lines) doesn’t mean much, you should be looking at the response times (the three “ms”-figures in each line):

Tracing route to www.parentpages.net [203.194.196.209]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
  2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms private.router [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
  3 28 ms 28 ms 28 ms you.dont.have.to.know [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
  4 27 ms 26 ms 26 ms xdsl-gate1-1.vo.lu [80.90.46.177]

Trace complete.

Looks OK to me (though certainly not amazingly fast from hop 12 on). Post your tracert results an let’s have a look (you can copy and paste from the DOS window by clicking on the icon in the upper left corner).

EDIT: Looks like hsiadogah already posted an answer while I was still trying to figure out which website you were talking about.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure it was normal.

Here’s what I got:

I’m tempted to blame network congestion in China for the problem. You have timouts (*) on:

210.22.255.253	CN CHINA SHANGHAI-WANGQUAN-CORP
210.52.132.230	CN CHINA CNCGROUP IP NETWORK
202.130.96.7 HK HONG KONG WHARF T&T LIMITED

If you want to, you could run “pathping www.parentpages.net” and post the results. Maybe this is going to tell us more. Warning: pathping takes a while to complete (several minutes).

Anyway, it doesn’t seem to be a problem with your webserver.

Oh, I think this explains it:

They are angry at the renegade province and decided to retaliate by disturbing internet traffic from Taiwan.
