Traditional martial artists need to smell the coffee

No Brian, just the MA threads on Forumosa.

First I get my profile deleted for not having enough posts. So I make some and what happens? Next I’ll get busted for “spamming” or something. Good bye Steve Zodiac, hello Alan Tracy! :s

Anyway, I started out by simply responding to an unanswered post specifically about Wing Chun … and it kinda grew from there.

The Taipei Times thread isn’t worth my NT$15 worth, so I figured I’d spend it here.

I have a copy too… and the VCD. Had I been part of the team, it would have read better and had better photos  When it comes to Wing Chun, my kung fu sucks; but when it comes to English it’s
“You’re kung fu is quite good.”

I haven’t trained with Lo Man Kam in more than two years… I picked a good time to go back… I got to be the “Wing Chun Dummy” for the French Special Forces guys.

I did know who Mike was, but he was senior student when I was learning how to stand up right… so we had little interaction.

Well, I’m not in for a wrestling match either. Maybe you’re right.
But he does say that he doesn’t want to have any “secret” kung fu
and vehemently denies the idea that Yip Man taught “secrets” to later students that he didn’t teach to his own family.

Sifu Lo also says that he wants his students to become better than him… but I guess he’s very particular about what he teaches and to whom.

I know he’s not going to teach me everything… heck Bruce Lee trained with Yip Man for years and there are those who say he didn’t learn “everything.”

Having said that, I did see the police kung fu sifu Lo Man Kam taught the special forces guys.
They were impressed with its simplicity and effectiveness. I was impressed by how much of it was applications (what the Japanese call "bunkai) of the forms.

Side bar: Sifu says that Bruce Lee’s fight scenes are 90 perecent from the third Wing Chun form… the other 10 percent is the kicks.

Nice to be able to agree with two people in this forum. Must be a first.

I’m what you might call a skeptical believer. A Doubting Thomas. Not quite a heretic. Not quite a True Believer. My view is “show me.”

That’s why I fell out with Shotokan karate (great moving zen, virtually useless for fighting) and really liked Ishhinryu karate (I’m sure Little Budhha has already explained that “complete martial art” to everyone. If not, check out his posts).

There are things I like about Wing Chun, especially the idea that it’s really kung fu for little people to use against bigger, stronger people. And there was one time when my very limited Wing Chun did help me fend off a bigger, stupider local gangster wanna-be.

But even Wing Chun, like all arts, has its shortcomings; and all teachers have their biases, as well as their “favourite” students.

So, for me, there is no perfect teacher, except for the one they called “Good Teacher”; and nothing is Gospel truth except the Gospel.

Nice to have a civilised discussion with you both.
