Can anyone tell me the convention in English for marking trans text as 暫譯. Used for example when referencing the name of a book that is in the process of publication but as yet has no name (lit. temporary translation).
Well, those characters do look like “temporary translation”.
As for the situation you describe, I don’t know a convention, but if the work has a temporary title already, I believe that’s a “working title”. If you translate that, I’d call it “working title translation”. If it has no title but you create a temporary one in another language, your guess is as good as mine – tentative title assigned by translator?

Yeah that’s kind of what I came up with too. Sometimes Chinese has a neat cover-all term that doesn’t exist in English and that causes much head-scratching when your manager suddenly demands an equivalent term.
