🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️ Triathlons

If it’s not already, they’ll probably close the lake for general swimming. That seems to be the general reaction to drowning deaths here.

Yes, no swimming at Liyu Lake. That’s part of the reason why I want to do a race at that location. For running, a loop around the lake is almost exactly 5k. I used to go there for running years ago when I was in Hualien.

There was an ocean swimming death at a Miaoli triathlon years ago. Big waves that day. I was there. They no longer have that race.

The swimming here for around 40 and older is not good, I have to say. They should have extra life guards at all events.

When I did the Sun Moon Lake swim, it was a requirement to have a big float thing. I could see why, most people were just lying on top of it and kicking their legs.

Olympic triathlon, unless it’s been changed from when i did them decades ago is 1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run.

It hasn’t changed. I did the Olympic distance once during an “Ironman” event in Taitung. I came in 3rd for my age group. The first place guy finished 20 minutes ahead of me (about the same times for the swim and cycling, and then he just blew me away on the run). Some guy from Australia. I’m guessing he did the Olympic distance as a warm-up for the full (Ironman) distance the next day.

But it’s all good. I left the venue and didn’t hear about my 3rd place finish until a few hours later, and they had to ship the trophy to me. I’m very proud of that 3rd place finish because my forte at the time was the sprint distance (half the Olympic distance).
