Frankly, they’re starting to bug me. It’s not just the violent postings either, it’s the ones that are just plain moronic. I have no problem with a good rant - I’m just hoping that we can raise the calibre a bit. I hate deleting posts, but some of the dreck that gets thrown my way is really infantile. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, at first look, the calibre of the posts reflects on the calibre of the Oriented population (or should I say, the Oriented Forums population – there are around 2,000 Oriented members, but only a tiny proportion actually post here). However, I’m guessing that many of the different unregistered names are really the same few people, which I suppose lowers the ratio of cretins in real terms.
I think registration would be the only way to stop this (or maybe making Oriented a paysite? – BWWA HAHAHA HAHA!).
That question has already been discussed ad nauseam, so I say just ignore 'em. The other board I visit regularly has this policy – the moderator will delete violent/hate/racist, etc. troll posts, but he goes further in that he actually emails registered users who respond to the trolls and reminds them (politely) that the easiest way to stop trolls is by using silence. It seems to work very well.
Much more work for you, though.

BTW, some trolls are actually pretty good – I had fun with Lady Judge, for example.
BTW, completely off-topic, but I saw a very interesting interview last night with director John Boorman (Deliverance, Hope & Glory, Tailor of Panama, et al) in which he spoke about his one-man crusade to reintroduce proper Anglo-Saxon into “polite” speech. He’s talking specifically about “fuck” and “c***.”
As in: “Hey, Mom, check out that stupid-looking c**t over there beside the frozen vegetable display,” I suppose.

He actually uses it in Tailor of Panama, which was pretty shocking – you just don’t expect Pierce Brosnan to say something like that. He’s James BOND, for fuck’s sake – Ooops!

When the debate over whether to keep ‘Rants and Raves’ was going on, I advocated keeping a place (which is now Open Forum) where people can say what they like unmoderated and unregistered, whilst people who don’t want to read a lot of crap or those who are easily offended can just stay away.
Although I still think moderation should be minimal I think ‘hate messages’ especially violent ones against particular groups or individuals should be deleted. I’m talking about extreme misogyny and racism etc. While everyone should be able to express their point of view, stuff that talks about “feminist bithces” etc is just shite that should be instantly scrapped with no explanation necessary. Actually maybe it would be best to scrap it and leave a little message like “Offensive misogynistic diaribe by Big Ern deleted”.

Bu En Lai,I guess you mean that when people besides you mention “feminist biatches” it should be deleted. What if someone is acting like a biatch or feminist or both? Feminist biatch seems about as valid a personal characterization as any to me. Either you prohibit most all insulting poster characterizations or you allow all of them. Seems like the only time people get mad is when the characterization hits a little too close to home. Trust me, I wouldn’t get angry if someone calls me a feminist biatch, or a misogynist asseye for that matter.

The system for anonym. posts could use a little tuning. Have all anonym. posters post under one handle, like anonymous cowards. If they want to post under their handle, they’ll need to register. This has an effect on trolls posting and replying. Takes minimal time and tuning to the system.
