Which brands of milk/ OJ do you think are least likely to be adulterated (as with the PRC plastic in juice scandals), full of pesticides, or otherwise problematic? In order to help people out, 1) please list the name, 2) if the brand doesn’t have an English name, please post a description of the logo (more specific than it has a cow and grass on it, since those are pretty ubiquitous), a photo, a link to the website, or something else that will save people from trying to memorize Chinese characters, 3) please list a store where you can get it (including if you think it is only available in a specific city).
I’m not sure if this question should go in this thread or health/ fitness (which mostly seems focused on exercise/ doctors). Moderators, feel free to move it, if it’s in the wrong one.
What Nuit said. The best milk I’ve found is Fourways (marked as “4ways milk” on the bottle), available at organic shops such as Santa Cruz etc and at co-ops such as Homekeeper’s Union.
And absolutely no OJ bought from the supermarket. Buy the oranges and squeeze. Platicizer juice is what you’ll get.
They made a nice experiment with Uni President pudding: 3 months, it did not go bad or grow mold. That is the kind of things we battle against. Uni President ios the largest food corporation on this island and you can’t trust them or anyone else. I mean, even Imei, for Pete’s sake…
I wouldn’t swear over a Bible regarding the organic milk we buy but at least it goes bad when spoiled and it tastes a lot better -when it is not spoiled, of course- than any chalk water you get at the supermarket.
I have seen Costco selling imported non-organic California milk. Might have hormones, but other than that probably good. Costco also sells a 2-pack of imported OJ.
Weichuan has been busted twice within just a year for adulterated crap, so we now boycott them. For OJ we buy only organic oranges, and juice them ourselves. And for milk we only buy Fourways (Si4fang1). Our yogurt and fresh cheese are homemade from the latter.
Where can you buy the organic oranges? Santa Cruz?
Do you have any recommendations for a juicer that doesn’t require much effort to make? I’ve some industrial ones that street vendors use, but that is probably overkill.
My wife sources whole cases of organic stuff all the time, directly from the farmers, and splits them with green friends. Same with apples, lemons, whole-wheat flour, and so on. The prices at the organic stores are too high if you want more than one of anything. But yes, you can buy organic fruit (and veg) at all the organic stores, as well as in the organic section of most supers, now.

Thanks. I think I have something like that already. I saw this really cool juicer machine that this lady used to make oj. She just threw it in the machine and it cut the oranges, juiced them, and spit the remains out. Definitely industrial grade but it was cool.
If I-mei sells it, we buy it. They have come through all of the recent scandals untouched. Unfortunately, their milk has calcium added so we don’t really like it. We drink raw milk when back home, so it’s just too far from what we really like. But, it’s OK for mixing for fruit shakes etc.
Guys, IMei was also involved in the gutter oil scandal. As to their milk, I was buying it until I tasted Fourway -heck, any of the organics. Flavor cannot compete.
Currently I “subscribe” for Chu Lu Ranch milk delivery every week. Very convenient.

Icon,
Do you know what I-Mei got done for in the oil scandal? So far I’ve only seen Chi-mei and Mei-Er-Mei on the lists, and the news I’ve read all point out how I-mei have had nothing come up again this time.

Well, it did was on the news in Chinese. I’ll look it up.
Not AFAIK. I’ll be interested to see what you have on this.
They were on the list in Chinese published in local papers. Not all products, of course. The first thing that came to mind was their safety lab being closed… by the government.
