though with the headquarters chart. makes me wonder, at least in regards to.cutting edge chips, if the HQ isnt nearly as important as where the actual factories are. In the sense of stealing and/or copycat shenanigans.

Taiwan has learned during its factory of the world phase that customers don’t like their factories for hire suddenly start to also design, make and brand their own products and becomes a competition.

Maybe things have changed once we’ve moved to fans instead of assembly lines, and the Koreans turned out to be right in the end, or maybe that lesson holds true today.

That’s because Korea makes mostly memory chips. Memory chips are all IDM. And memory chips are a commodity; they’re all the same.

Huh? In what way was Korea right? Taiwan is doing so much better over all.

In the assembly line, usually it is more helpful to have engineers working closely with the assembly operation, as that will usually help them either gain into into design for assembly, or figure out new ways to improve assembly. Now that we have fabs instead of assembly lines, TSMC is providing their customers with a lot of design aid that kind of serves the same purpose, so maybe that’s why Samsung’s model doesn’t really show any advantage over TSMC, or over their IC design competitors. Although it is hard to tell which is the right model down the road. We are really at the physical limitations of silicon-based scaling. We can’t scale actual pitch and node, so we are doing all kinds of 3D structures in order to have similar properties of actual scaling. At some point, we will have to move on to another material, and that is when all cards are reshuffled.

Samsung foundry services work with design, EDA and IP services the same TSMC and other all other companies.

What models? Samsung and TSMC are very different businesses.

Where on earth do you get this information from. Do you just make it up?

Yes, but Samsung also have their own IC design business. Traditionally that should give them some kind of insight to other companies who just do design or just do manufacturing.

Not for decades. The only advantage would have been earlier access to new nodes, but even that’s not good idea as Intel learnt a long time ago.

It’s irrelevant now, the industry simply doesn’t and cannot work that way.

what part? I am hired to do 80 hours work. So I do 80 hours of that paid work. whether I live 5 mins or 500 mins isnt really related to the work being paid for. I know this has changed as of late. And there are examples where this doesnt ring true.

They weren’t hired to do 80hrs a week. Even more, I doubt that’s remotely legal.
