Tsui Hark directs 'The Tempest' as Chinese opera

The Tempest, by Shakespeare, will be performed in an adaptation for Chinese opera (in Mandarin, not English) at the National Theater. And it’s going to be directed by Tsui Hark. :sunglasses:

Performances December 30 through January 2, along with another in Taoyuan on January 8.

Tickets are going fast. (There’s already nothing cheaper than NT$1,200 per seat.)

I can’t believe this thread has gotten only eight views so far, so I’m renaming it and bumping this up. Come on, now: this show is gonna be so cool. (Or at least I sure hope so.) And I suspect that, with the vote going the way it is, lots of you are going to be feeling the need for some escapism.

I’ve already bought my tickets (Saturday afternoon show).

Sorry Cranky, I clicked on it twice, you clicked on it twice, so its really only about 6 views.
NT$1,200 minimum to have my ears assailed by alien caterwauling? Doesn’t appeal. Even Tsui Hark cannot mitigate the aural horror that is Chinese opera.
But then, I’m a philistine who thinks the only good Shakespeare is a dead one. Wait a minute…

Sounds cool. Who wants to buy me tickets?

This ended up being one of the best performances I’ve seen in Taiwan. The sets, costumes, acting, choreography, and music were all wonderful. The only moments I found myself wincing were when Miranda was on stage, because her voice was the most Chinese-opera-esque of all the players (i.e. it was sing-songy and would have been audible only to certain breeds of dogs if it had been pitched much higher). Fortunately, she’s no Portia and so didn’t have many lines.

But everything else was stunning. The person who played Ariel was especially good.

There will be one more performance in Taoyuan this Saturday (Jan. 8).
