Hailing from Germany, Obscura has stood at the forefront of contemporary technical death metal since its formation in 2002 by Steffen Kummerer. Fusing blistering speed, intricately complex songwriting, and profound philosophical inquiry, the band has crafted a sonic aesthetic that is both coldly rational and vast in its cosmic scope. Taking their name from the legendary Gorguts album, Obscura spiritually inherits the same ambition—to push death metal to the outer limits of structure and thought.
From the breakthrough of Cosmogenesis, which established their global reputation, to their latest 2025 release A Sonication, Obscura continue to evolve. Within a highly technical framework, they refine melody and dynamic depth, transforming virtuosity from mere speed into meticulously constructed sonic architecture. The fluid lines of fretless bass, the dimensional wall of seven-string guitars, and near-mechanical rhythmic precision define their overwhelming live presence.
On May 5th, Obscura will perform in Taiwan for the very first time—an opportunity to witness technical death metal at its absolute peak up close.
