These universal TV remote controls are becoming popular to shut down annoying television sets, avoiding the hassle of gaining a consensus on the issue.
Right or wrong?
That’s great! I’d use it on the buses that now feature tvs with nonstop cartoons and advertising. And Taiwan has plenty of restaurants where it would come in handy. Of course it’s a violation of the rights of the restaurant owner/bus company, but that’s too bad. There’s too much noise in the world. Too bad the guy sold out in 2 days.

what a scathing review, not so much of the product as of the inventor:
Read the Wired News profile, where Altman wanders through a city, turning off other peoples’ televisions, peppering his behavior with such gems as, “We just saved him several minutes of his life.” Maybe after making his tens of dozens of dollars on the TV-B-Gone, Altman can invent a gadget that transports self-important cocks who think they’re waging a subversive culture war to a log cabin coffee shop where they can reassure each other how awesome they are for hating television. Free berets for the first 100 pricks to use the word “Sheeple!”
Give the guy a break. He invents electronic gadgets for a living. What kind of a personality would you expect? Moreover, can you blame him for raving about the importance of his product, when his income is based on sales? And consider the motivation of the writer, trying to write an entertaining review of a piece of electronic gadgetry.
But the fact remains, it’s a pretty cool device. I don’t know about you, but I dislike having the tv incessantly blaring in the background at every eatery in Taiwan, and especially for the duration of every visit to the inlaws. Does one really need to be up to the minute with news on every car crash and burning building? It’s unlikely the device would cause the TV owners to appreciate life without TV, but for those of us who are tired of all the noise it’s a nice idea, although maybe part of the thrill does derive from the secret power it bestows on the device’s owner.
It depends on how strong you are.
In other science news, it seems that somebody else has invented a device that will turn off all cell-phones within say, the area of a building.

So now all we need is a machine that shuts up PEOPLE.

The portable ones are only good for a fairly small radius. A buddy has one that works to about 20~25m. They don’t switch the phones off, just jam them to prevent conversation. A phone in use will drop the call, one on standby won’t get any calls.

only commenting on the scathing review. don’t remember making any personal comments …
however, while i also dislike tv’s everywhere, and their prevelence in nearly every aspect of our lives, i’m not sure if shutting off someone’s tv (in a restaurant etc.) isn’t a good way to get hit. and even more so shutting off someone’s tv who is in their own home. i don’t think i have that right, or want the responsibility to decide what should(n’t) be watchable.
having lived without cable tv for the last 12 years, we don’t have that problem in this house, and although the wife does complain from time to time, she has, by her own admission, somewhat come around to the idea. we often wind up at restaurants etc. with a boob tube so she can get her fill of the gossip (sorry, news) that is broadcast ad infinum. still, if i don’t wanna deal with it, we go to a place with no tv - there are places out there.
Environment is everything and treated like nothing. I would relish the arguements that would arise from the wide spread use of a volume control. In my opinion though an off button is going too far.
I wish there was a way to turn off the amps on the policians’ and vendors’ sound trucks remotely.
For that matter, I wish people would start making life miserable for “human spam”. (You know, the people who block the sidewalk and hand out ads.)
You could always follow in the footsteps of “The King” and fire a couple rounds into the ole boob tube. That should about do the trick.
While your at it you might as well get your neighbour’s tube too.
Howver, i wouldn’t recommend this method on crying babies 
TV … all background noise to me, like the scooters and the garbage truck … hm, ok, maybe not the garbage truck :s
This must be the most valuable invention in recent memory - a universal remote that will turn off any televison set. Now if only they had one for cell phones…
