TV cards for computers, and recording programs

Since I went without a TV for around 12 years, I’m almost completely ignorant of current TV technology. A friend of mine wants to know how she can record a TV program which is showing a promotion of her school. I have little to no idea. I have a vague idea that she could use something TiVo, but that seems ridiculously expensive overkill for her needs.

She is not in the least tech-savvy, and has no idea how to go about recording this program. It strikes me that it would be easier for me to purchase a TV card for my computer, and find some way to view and record the program myself, then give it to her. Of course I don’t have cable, I only have a clunky old TV which my wife and I use for watching the odd DVD. I don’t even know if the channel is a cable station or a broadcasting station (apparently its Yo Yo TV, channel 25). I’m assuming this is Yo Yo TV (surely there can’t be too many of them, even in Taiwan).

What would people suggest? I have until Saturday morning to come up with something brilliant.

If you want to record to your computer, you do need cable. I bought a TV cable card and it works ok… Cost me about 1200NT for mine. Mine was internal but you can also get external. From there you can record any TV.

Argh, that’s annoying. I’m guessing cable can’t be set up in a couple of days (though we seem to have the physical wires here). I’ll see what else I can do. Thanks for the help.

You can also do the “record to VCR then transfer digitally to your computer” route. But again you’ll need to buy some equiptment for your computer.

Thanks.

Why not? This is Taiwan – though that typhoon could complicate matters.

But it would probably be easier and cheaper to find someone you know who already has cable and would be willing to record the show in exchange for the temporary/permanent use of a TV card for his/her computer.

Alternate plan: Find a small, non-chain computer store that sells TV cards. The laoban there will almost certainly have one installed on his own computer. Simply offer him a few hundred NT to record the program you want.

Just get Frost to do it for free! (OK, give him some beer)

I’m guessing not precisely because this is Taiwan. Previous experience has had me waiting for a week for someone to install ADSL (in two separate apartments).

Good ideas, and irishstu that’s a very good extension of the first of these. Frost, if you’re amenable I’d be more than willing to compensate you with a slab or keg of your favourite brew, or whatever you would consider a reasonable exchange for your services.

In fact, why not post the time and the channel here in case I, or anyone else, have a chance to record it? (no promises from me - my weekends are extremely unpredictable)

Thanks, I’ll post what I can remember and then check the details tonight. It’s Yo Yo TV, apparently channel 25, and the program is being aired this Saturday morning and repeated on Sunday morning. I think it shows at around 8am, but I’ll check.

This would be a real help. We lent my friend our video camera for her to shoot her own footage of the filming at the studio, and that worked very well, but of course she’s interested in capturing the professional footage of the show itself, so that she can use it for promotional purposes and show it to the parents.

The times are:

  • Saturday 11am-11:30

  • Sunday 8am-8:30

Well… I recorded the show that was on YoYo TV on Saturday morning from 11-11.30. Kid’s show, right? One guy and one girl presenting, getting all the kids to swing their arms and stuff like that?

Oh you champion, thank you so much. Yes that sounds exactly like it. Kids’ show, a guy and a girl in astonishingly awful clothes fooling about with music and armswinging in the canonical manner, perfect. How can I arrange to get the recording from you and compensate you for your time and effort?

Well, let me tidy it up a bit. There’s some extra crap at the beginning and the end that I have to edit out (unless you want to do it). Also, what format do you want it in? DVD? Avi?

Are you in Taipei?

Yes I’m in Tapei, and I can come and meet you wherever you like. A DVD or an AVI would be great. Preferably anything I can read on my computer and copy (so that copies can be distributed to the parents).
