I love a good antagonist. Which character makes you seethe with irrational hatred? Whom would you want to pull them from your flat screen and beat on mercilessly? Is there someone out there on the tube that gets your ire up?
I’ve been watching Big Love recently and Rhonda Volmer, the 15 year old runaway is really making me hope something really nasty befalls her character and soon.
Out of curiosity why Nigella? She is wonderful to watch (sound off even), she makes cooking shows a bit ‘R rated’ in her voice and enthusiasm for food! She is actually a fav of mine. :lick:
I’m about up to here with the local celeb Janet, she is endorsing and advertising for everything now.
I’m not sure who this is, but sounds like she is an actual person. Reality shows are not characterizations. I should have been more clear about this, I guess. This is about actor portrayals, nu?
Are we talking about Taiwanese TV characters here? If so, I think it would be easier for me to list the ones I like. Here are the people I hate the most:
All the sellout foreigners who go on TV to show off their Chinese ability and play the Western monkey.
That kind of older white guy with blonde/brown hair who sometimes wears glasses and is in a lot of commercials and hosts shows sometimes.
Witty King’s English (or something like that) - everyone on that show (even the kids).
That white guy with tats and who skates and who used to live in Kaohsiung and knows Chinese and Taiwanese and often goes on talk shows and wears a hat because he has no hair.
If someone could provide me with names/pics, I could confirm who I hate and focus my hate on them some more.
(I think I have developed a hatred of other foreigners over the years living in Taiwan. Is there a name for this condition (no, I don’t live in Taipei if that makes a difference - I used to, though)

Nope, that’s not what we are talking about. But thanks for sharing.
She used to be a more interesting character, but ever since her character’s marriage to a co-worker, followed by her pregnancy and birth, this once wild, unpredictable free spirit of a character has been “love this, family that, pregnancy this, baby that”. Boredom.

Fair enough Chris, but does being boring raise your dander up to the point where you scream out in anguish?
In HBO’s Big Love, the character of Rhonda Volmer drives me to acrimony. When writing a story, if you want drama, you need a good antagonist to give the protagonist’s journey credibility. I started this thread to try and find a character that has equally or more vile gravitas as this little lying, scheming bitch does.
She is such a convincing cunt that she is turning the polygamist family into the protagonist. I was dead set against being drawn into their religo freakiness, but so convincing is this character that I find myself inexplicably cheering for the family to overcome her machinations. She reminds me of the bile that rises in me during a production of Moliere’s Tartuffe, maybe one of literature’s all time great hypocrites.
So, to recap, I am looking for the all time great asshole as conceived by a writer. The Tartuffe of the Tube, as it were. I have been wracking my brain to come up with one as twisted as Rhonda, but can’t even come close. And, unlike Dragonbones, I watch a LOT of TV.
Tom Save: simmer down there buddy, this is just a thread, not a defining moment in ones life.
char·ac·ter [kar-ik-ter] noun
the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
one such feature or trait; characteristic.
moral or ethical quality: a man of fine, honorable character.
qualities of honesty, courage, or the like; integrity: It takes character to face up to a bully.
reputation: a stain on one’s character.
So with that information sorted out, anyone on TV is a character. Be it their own persona or that of a written part. And come on, lets at least agree that even ‘reality’ tv persona don’t actually act like that off the cameras (Janet for instance). And if they do, they are still a character, be it fictional or non. But since it seems par for the forums the last month let’s call in the help of a mod to get this back on track…why? (B.T.W. I would not ask DragonBones ‘why’ at anytime.)
There ya go. That’s what I’m talking about. Good one james.

Thanks for the lesson, but I don’t need to simmer down “buddy”.
No, I don’t do television. But thank you for asking. [/quote]
Saying this used to make you look smart, nowadays it kind of makes you look out of touch and willfully ignorant. There is a lot of good content on TV, even if you rule out all fiction there are still of ton of things that will both educate and entertain you. You really should give it another shot.
