Oh, no. I hung with a few the last time I was in Bali, both in Kuta and in Ubud. I even snuck some contraband brownies to an Aussie woman at the health resort I stayed at…contraband because she was supposed to be on a vegan fast. I happened to be in Kuta on my surfing lesson and thought of her when grabbing some snacks to bring back up to Ubud.
Anyway, it’s not the nationality of scum. I doubt they’re all Australian. It’s the general lack of respect they show to the culture, its people, and its land (and water). Smuggling drugs is just one of the manifestations of that disrespect.
I remember being in Bali a few years ago. The best thing was that no one (Balinese) thought I was Australian (which I am). After spending 2 months travelling through Sumatra with some English people, I got to Bali and saw all the Australians. Seeing the Aussie package tourists made me ashamed to be Australian - they were the biggest bunch of wankers I’ve ever come across. So I faked an English accent the whole time I was there. It wasn’t the best accent - I got asked if I was German once, but at least I didn’t sound Australian.
Back on topic. What’d they have - 8 kg of smack each? Or was it 8kg between 4 people? Still, it’s a lot. Worth a lot more than the $5000 and free air ticket they were being paid. Not the smartest cookies, IMHO. In a perfect world, all drugs would be legal and medically regulated. Goodbye drug related crime. But, it’s not a perfect world, drugs are illegal, and anyone stupid enough to allow someone to strap multi-kgs of smack to their body deserves the sentence - for stupidity as much as anything else. I do hope there are no death sentences, as that’s something I’m morally opposed to. But life? Hell yeah, they knew the risks, the took the chances, they got caught.
Perhaps there should be a new question on a passport application, relating to drug trafficking and penalties. If you don’t get the question right, you don’t get the passport. Would sure save a lot of stupid people from going to prison.
Seems that mule pictured previously vowing he didn’t know what he was carrying has an extensive drug history. That has to be extremely bad news for the rest of them. They cop their sentences later today.
All in all a tragic tale of a bunch of stupid working class kids.
Rush committed 16 crimes: report
February 14, 2006 - 11:38AM
Convicted drug mule Scott Rush had an extensive criminal history stemming from an addiction to drugs, it has been claimed.
The 20-year-old was yesterday sentenced to life in jail after being arrested on April 17 last year at Bali airport with 1.3kg of heroin strapped to his legs.
The fresh-faced Rush told Bali judges he was naive to believe promises of a paid holiday to Bali, but had no idea he was becoming involved in a drug operation.
He said when threatened with death, he said he was too terrified to run and turn himself over to police.
But the Courier-Mail newspaper today has reported that Rush committed 16 crimes in Queensland over two years, stemming from an addiction to illicit and prescription drugs.
His offences included drug possession, fraud and theft.
Three months before arriving in Bali, Rush admitted in court that his crimes were drug related.
That’s one of the most depressing websites I’ve seen in a while. To get that sort of sentence for trying to smuggle a couple kilos of heroin through an airport is one thing, but to get that sort of sentence for a dozen E pills and a personal stash of pot is a bit much.

Hey, people often think I am Polish when I speak. Can we swap, you take mi Polish [must be a family curse from the 19th century when someone came from Poland] and I take your Australian?
C’mon, Polish is cool:
boooah and I went to Taiwan, damned
She has MY BIG NOSE. But hers is beautiful! And those slawic eyes. Oh my God, MY ETHNIC ROOTS are calling. Wait… wife … um …

He also had 24 grams of hero. That’s more than enough to turn a school kid into a junkey.
There’s another story on that website of a guy who got life for sending small amounts of ecstasy by mail from Polland. He was sending it to his so called girlfriend(Thai). She supposedly convinced him to send her the drug. Problem is she was a police officer.
Comes to show, going even near drugs in Thailand is a very dangerous thing to do. Looking at the pic of this guy with hero strapped to his abdomen, I do not feel compassionate one bit. I’m thinking “hope you had a fine trip buddy.” :loco:

They should show the death penalty being carried out live. Then perhaps some people might really understand that drugs traffficking is not to be tolerated.
I absolutely agree with you. What point is the death penalty as an abstract event. They really should throw open the town squares and televise it. Let reality TV have it’s head. There’d definitely be upside for Sattelite TV given the region we’re in.
Just one question. Do you also support the PLA method of strangling the accused with fine wire so they can’t make any final bravado statements on the way to the execution ground? I think just overcoming a loss of bowel control would be heroic enough, but in some cultures they demand a song or at least something said with gusto.
I may sound like I’m taking the piss, but in fact I am quite serious.
