Two papers, two views

Two different news stories:

The Taiwan News today says this:

Headline: “Truth commission determines bullet found at site injured Chen”

The truth commission said … that the bullet found at the site of the shooting was THE ONE that injured Chen on the eve of the March 20 presidential election.

---------------------------------------------------------- BUT HOWEVER ALAS

The Taipei Times says:

Headline: “319 committee calls for president’s recall”

The Truth Committee yesterday announced that …“Two preliminary findings have been made – the gunshot that hit President Chen Shui-bian’s abdomen did NOT occur at 1:45 pm on March 19th, 2004 on Jinghwa Road, and was NOT caused by a lead bullet and the motive of this incident might be rationally derived as to manipulate the election…”

So what is it? How can reporters cover the same press conference and come away with two different conclusions?

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Duh. Not you, Lane - the reporter. If any bullet injured Chen Shuibian, it was the one they found lodged in his clothes. What was found at the site afterwards was not bullets but bullet casings. The only conclusions they could come to would be that the casing does, might or does not match the bullet.
