Related question, is it required not to work during a typhoon day? For example, if employees can work safely at home then is there any regulation saying you cannot compel them to work? Serious question.
I figure I’d get an answer faster here than waiting for my accountant to respond or reading through the labor laws.
I remember reading that you can compel them. Cant remember where. Probably here. Edit: the thread below seems to say it depends.
My student once complained that her boss made her take home her laptop home because a typhoon was predicted. She felt like she had been robbed of a holiday so it happens.
I think this was discussed last year, I can’t remember the outcome but I think work from home was allowed. Do a quick search in the 2023 thread.

Yeah, but talk about a way to piss off someone. Upper management, maybe, but otherwise, I would try to avoid that, especially with Taiwanese employees.

Here’s the thing. I allow flexible work hours and employees often work from home. So if you are able to work safely from home then why not? We’ve got a lot of shit to do tomorrow.
I’ve done some digging and it seems yes you are able to work from home. The only stipulation is that if say power went out, or it was not safe to work then an employer cannot punish employees for not working. Employers are also not obligated to pay if they work. That’s what I gather. (I’d still pay them anyhow)
Personally I think working from home is fair. The typhoon isn’t a holiday, it’s a safety measure.

EDIT: Last holdouts pretty much all cancelled work/classes tomorrow. On the website only Kinmen, Chiayi City, and Taitung (excluding Lanyu Island) have work and classes tomorrow.

They said Northern Taiwan will have a lot of action starting Wednesday noon.
Forecasters on Twitter are saying that it is rapidly intensifying right now. It’s been upgraded to a Category 4. The eye has cleared which means it can get stronger quickly and will continue to strengthen until it hits Taiwan. It’s basically a super typhoon at this point at 140 mph winds. Another ten mph, and it will be considered a category 5.

Pingtung City last night and this morning has been quiet, grey cloud as far as the eye can see. It’s actually feels nice with a fan blowing cool air from my window.
This feels a bit like a few years ago, when they called the typhoon days too early and then had to go back to work in the really shitty weather. If I remember correctly they got a lot of bad feedback from that, then were reluctant to call a typhoon day for a while.
Is this why they named it “ant”? I’m seriously contemplating a run up the mountain.
