Typhoons 2024

and people at the beach taking selfies

I was just thinking I would not be standing there!

Wow

if you watch it, some people have even taken their kids.

It could be a once in a lifetime experience.

Or a last in a lifetime experience. :slightly_frowning_face:

Yes, that was the joke.

Quin’lat was an ancient city on Qo’noS, the Klingon homeworld.

Klingon history, as preserved in the sacred texts, told of a time when Kahless the Unforgettable was in the city. As great storm approached the city, the residents sought protection within the walls, except for one man who stayed outside the walls. When Kahless went to the man, he asked him what he was doing. The man replied, “I am not afraid. I will not hide my face behind stone and mortar. I will stand before the wind and make it respect me.” Kahless respected the man and returned to the safety of the walls. On the following day, the man was killed by the storm.

Fifteen centuries later, in 2369, in an effort at persuading Chancellor Gowron that he was Kahless returned from Sto-vo-kor, a clone of Kahless recounted this story and warned Gowron against being defiant by saying, “The wind does not respect a fool. Do not stand before the wind, Gowron” (TNG: “Rightful Heir”)

Uncle Bob is staying. I hope he’s up North FL enough though not to bear the worst of the storm.

There is only one cousin in Gainesville. Last I read she was praising the Lord’s protection on FB.

Well, they may have had many experiences of standing prone on a shoreline exposed to hurricane-level wind and waves. So it would definitely be last, but not necessarily once.

On the other hand, “once in a lifetime” is common English parlance, flowing smoothly like gentle waves and rivulets on a tropical shoreline, while “last in a lifetime” is infrequent to the point of awkwardness, much like the crashing of the ocean against the concrete bulkhead pictured in the stream.

I think AS gets the win here.

Wait, why are we talking about hurricanes? Hurricanes don’t happen around Taiwan.

I would defer to the brilliance of these New Yorkers, with some help from Brian Eno, who remain ahead of their time and frighteningly prescient.

Just different names for essentially the same big, wet, windy thing.

TL wants us to stay on topic  Be careful what you wish for @Taiwan_Luthiers!

I’m just more curious as to how long will it take for them to restore power after the storm…

Well, some people are sticklers for the rules and keeping threads focused. :face_with_peeking_eye:

There are pictures around GA/FL of parking lots full of electric ‘bucket’ trucks. They drive in after and restore power. They’re independent and make bucket-loads, pun intended, after storms.

Why?

Crazy. about 35 minutes from eye landfall

BBC and CNN did not make any live connection with Taiwan during the typhoon, they practically ignored it, but now because there is a hurricane in Florida it seems like the end of the world and there is only One News, on CNN and BBC.

Because Taiwan doesn’t exist in their eyes unless it affects them (like shipping or supply chain disruptions).

That last typhoon left a patch of cold sea water…
