Unclassifiable Music

So I wikied “Jam Band.”

The article even mentions String Cheese Incident. I know, this song in particular may not sound like a jam band jam, but I’ve heard Phish play similar songs at shows.

String Cheese falls in the jam band category, so if you go to one of their shows expect to have a lot of smelly hippies around.

Jam bands play a music that could be considered a form of jazz.

They’ve been on the cover of Relix, nuff said.

“Jam band” sounds like something I could accept. I have a hard time calling this a form of music jazz, though. And I like everything from Sarah Vaughan to Jeff Beck, from Ben Webster to Al DiMeola.

I think a jam band music and jazz are similar in that in most songs, each band member has a turn playing a solo. Even in big band jazz, each section lead usually has a chance to show off. Compare it with a traditional rock band where the main focus would be the vocals with a place in most songs for a lead guitar solo.
