Unwelcome protein supplement

I don’t do much for my health, but a couple of months ago I got a jar of sliced ginseng from DiHua street on a whim. I would nibble on a couple of flakes every once in a while, more because I find the taste nostalgic than anything (yes, I’m weird). I usually keep the jar in my kitchen, but today, for some reason, I decided to snack on the ginseng while I was doing stuff on my laptop. I had a piece in my mouth when I noticed that something was crawling up the side of the jar. From the inside.

I’m sure you can guess the rest. The jar was infested with little bugs and I never noticed before because I usually closed the jar as soon as I popped a piece out. The bugs are about two milimeters long. You could mistake them for husky fruit flies except they do not fly as well. There were about six adults in the jar, but every other piece of ginseng had either had chewholes or a fat little larvae nestled inside the piece. :astonished:

I killed all the bugs I could find and threw the batch of ginseng out. I hope my kitchen doesn’t get infested.

Just thought I’d share. Who else like ginseng? Do you eat it plain, or in stuff? Have you had problems with the little buggers before, and how did you deal?

I just found ants in my organic maple syrop which pisses me off as it’s veyr expensive stuff.

First I thought this thread was about something else.

Everything gets bugs in it, especially pasta and beans; I just keep everything in the fridge or in the washing machine.

You can just run that through a fine mesh strainer and it’ll be fine. If you’re really worried you could boil it briefly, but it shouldn’t really need it.

What’s an ‘inorganic’ maple, anyway? :loco:

Buttercup, are you saying that dried pasta gets buggy??? say it ain’t so! We made the mistake of leaving bread out and the next day as I was slicing it ants started pouring out of it.

Sometimes it has beesties in it before you even open it. Are they called weevils?

FYI, every foodstuff can have to a degree some bug or insect parts/droppings in it and it’s completely legally accepted …
