If I buy the Windows Vista Upgrade, does it matter if my current version of XP isn’t “Genuine”?
As far as I know, you must have an authentic, genuine version of Windows of XP in order to install the upgrade version of Vista. When you install the upgrade, you install over your existing Windows install instead of wiping your hard drive and doing a clean install. If your XP is unauthenticated, you will probably be denied the upgrade.
If you want to install Vista but don’t want to pay the expensive retail price, you can buy the OEM version of Vista. In Taiwan the 32 bit version of Vista Home Premium is about 4700nt, almost half the price of retail. The primary differences are that it doesn’t come in a fancy box, Microsoft will not provide you with any support, and you are theoretically only allowed to install it on one machine.
This is the route that I took, I don’t care about packaging, I can do my own troubleshooting, and in the future I can probably find a workaround to installing it on another machine.
By the way, I have been very happy with Vista, it performs great, has some nice features, and looks good.
Good luck.
