10th Urban NOmad almost here… schedule out this week!
2011 schedule is out at all your fave places around town. Our theme this year is ‘creativity’ and we bring it to you with 2 documentaries
by banned Chinese artist, Ai Wei-Wei, a special video mindfuck party with Guggenheim artist and Animal
Collective collaborator, Danny Perez, and members of Gang Gang Dance.
There’s a helluva lot more which you should check out for yourself, including a damn fine
skateboarding movie made by a former English teacher in the Hsinchu area… see below.
Oh yeah, we also got some wacky submissions like “Eyes
and Ears on English,” a teaching vid which turns farcical when it explains terms like
“pimp your ride” and “i’m gonna roll up on your mother.”
this is a sweet film we just confirmed.
the director used to be an english teacher
in Hsinchu, and it was actually the inspiration
behind some of the scenes (an abandoned amusement
park). he wanted to fly here and shoot, but didn’t have
enuff money. its a sweet flick if you like wes andersen,
and in my opinion a true rising star in film world

Once in a decade a great skateboard film comes along and this is it! Walter dreams of making it big in the world of professional skateboarding. One day his dreams come true as his gold painted VHS tape gains him entry into the exclusive, baroque world of Macho Taildrop, a sprawling castle where pros duel on a half-pipe floating in the river, and idyllic grounds that play host to banquets and an underground skateboard factory. Walter soon meets his idol, Blair Stanley (Rick Mccrank), soon learning the dark side of this prestigious skateboard company. Walter’s fantasy eventually dissolves into an apocalyptic nightmare as the company takes over a derelict amusement park that is the territory of the renegade Man Wolves, who are hell bent on keeping skateboarding pure and wild. A breathtaking visual debut and entertaining coming of age film for all audiences.
Screening is Saturday, May 7 with local skate/surf films, skaraoke, and Wu Meng-Lung, a local who is going for the record in 24 hour distance skateboarding
Winnebago Man was great and got lots of laughs from the crowd. The Mindfuck Party was also a very fun night. I don’t think I was mindfucked, but I had a great time there and drinking beer at Alleycats. Ethan’s food was also a treat!
I’m planning on going to the skateboard event on tomorrow afternoon, catch Skaraoke and then stay for the movies. Any other Forumosans heading along too?
Man I love Huashan… it’s such a cool spot for events like this!
Abaddon is a 52-minute visual album produced by The Corrupted (Paul Kemp and Gareth Murfin). The film, which features non-stop mind-blowing animated images, was screened last year at Urban Nomad and caught the attention of Taiwan indie band Loh Tsui Kweh Commune (LTK, 濁水溪公社). The band’s lead singer Hsiao-ko (小柯) later commissioned The Corrupted to direct the music video for LTK’s 2010 single Take That, My Love (情人看刀).
