Can anybody shed some light: How and Where I can get a Chinese Student Visa for about 90 days from Taiwan? I am a U. S. citizen and I was told by travel agents here that I have to go in person to Hong Kong for getting any type of visas to go to China. Is that true? There must be a way here… It might(must be) have something to do with the fingerprint-thingy now required for foreigners to enter the U. S…

Right. The people you spoke to must have been confused … pershaps you should show them the “Republic of China Constitution” which clearly states that Mainland China is part and parcel of the Republic of China.
Hence, I would suggest that the Ministry of the Interior’s Bureau of Entry and Exit should be able to give you the “visa” to visit those areas which are part of Mainland China. (After all, since this involves a “domestic” matter, it is hard to see how the ROC’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs could be involved … )

Iamhere, if you are in Taiwan now then yes you will have to go to Hong Kong in person, if not in Taiwan, then visit your nearest Chinese (PTC) embassy.
China also charges US citizens more than most other countries.
I got a Chinese travel visa through a travel agent in Taichung. She mailed it to Hong Kong I think. It took 10 working days I believe. I’m not too sure about getting a student visa though. Sorry the info is a bit vague. Maybe useless if it’s a student visa you want. If you’re in Taichung I can hook you up with a friend who is a travel agent and seems to know everything about visas both international and domestic.
If you have all the papers from the school you are applying to then maybe you can mail your stuff to Hong Kong to avoid a costly stop-over. Look in to it

No, you do not have to go to Hong Kong. Interlink can set up a 90 day tourist visa for you. It will take 2 weeks (they will send your pport to the US), and it will cost you a lot of money - 5,000 NT or so (ask them for the current exact amt).
I have no idea about student visas. I don’t even know if there is such a thing as a 90 day student visa. My impression was student visas were all significantly longer, though I have no first-hand knowledge to share.
Yes, you can get the visa here from Interlink. The chinese government allows a travel agent to apply for you. You can also send your passport back to the US to have it done by a travel agent there if you don’t trust the agents here. There is a website called visarite or something like that.
The student visa is either visa x or f, I can’t remember off the top of my head. It would be good to send an invitation letter from your school in with your application, and it will take about 2 weeks. The student visa is generally good for the amount of time you are invited to study, and I don’t think you need any funds confirmation. I’m sending one off this week sometime so I can post more as I find it out.
This is the story as I know it so far, if anyone has tried this and had problems or different experiences, please let us know.

And don’t forget to make copies of your passport and Taiwanese visa before you send it away.

Any Brits out there travelled to China on a tourist Visa (L-type)??? How much did it cost?

Can you get visas in Taiwan again? I was told that service had stopped. The place I went last time was the Japan Travel Agency in Honk Honk, but if I were you I’d get a multiple entry one if you’re going a lot as the prices for Brits are outrageous.

Do let me know if China visas are available in Taiwan again for British citizens as The War Department needs one and she doesn’t really want to spend a night in a hotel in Hong Kong to get one.

The price here is more than I’ve been quoted. And damned outrageous at that :fume:
I’m not directly dealing with getting my Visa because the poor sod who is organising our company holiday is doing that. And of course he was completely unable to explain why I need to hand over 4,200 of my hard earned NT Dollars for a Visa. Now I understand why and methinks I will perhaps need to offer said poor sod some form of apology for being a trifle cantankerous…
It looks like it will be no cheaper for me to handle this myself.
