US citizen population in Taiwan?

The following article was written by a Taiwanese person in the USA, and complains about Taiwan’s failure to be accepted for membership by the WHO.

Interestingly, it gives a figure of 170,000 US citizens resident in Taiwan. Is this accurate?

Although some people would say: “Why don’t you just ask AIT?” I suspect that AIT does not have full data on this head count.

This is because there are many ROC-USA dual nationals here who have never registered with AIT.

Does anyone have a source for better statistics?

My guess is that it is impossible to tell, because many dual citizens enter Taiwan using their ROC passport. Therefore, even the entry and exit records that the government maintains will not show the correct number. AIT maintains records, but those are only as accurate as those that have actually registered.
