Pacific Rim Bureau (CNSNews.com) - Weeks into Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian’s second term, a new push in the U.S. Congress aims to restore full recognition of and diplomatic relations with Taiwan, in the face of continued threats by communist China.

Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado recently introduced a “sense of Congress” resolution, pressing for the U.S. to resume normal relations with Taiwan, “separate from the authoritarian communist regime in Beijing.”

It said Taiwan should also be allowed to participate as an equal partner in international organizations like the United Nations…

“Sense of Congress” resolutions are not binding on the executive branch of government, and they have no formal impact on public policy. But they are an important indicator - both to the administration and foreign governments - of lawmakers’ views on topical issues.

Tancredo spokesman Carlos Espinosa said Monday the resolution has drawn a lot of interest and support from both sides of the aisle…

The motion says the “one China policy” - under which China views Taiwan as a renegade province that must be incorporated, by force if necessary - is “effectively obsolete.”

The policy “does not reflect the obvious reality that Taiwan has, is, and continues to effectively function as an independent and sovereign nation,” it says…
Foreign policy being the responsibility of the president, this sort of statement by congress or elements thereof is rarely allowed to advance to the point where it could actually change anything. Sorry.

Right. Such resolutions have been passed by the Congress many times since 1979 when the Taiwan Relations Act came into effect . . . .

I understand, but look at a recent example. Congress passed something regarding the WHO and in the end the President signed it to make it official. So it does happen and has happened recently.

The USA has always been in favor of Taiwan being somehow admitted into the WHO. So now they are in favor of “observer status” . . . . . .

By the way, if anyone can find any mention of “observer status” in the WHO Constitution, I will buy you a beer . . . . . Please tell me which Article it is . . . . . . since I have never been able to find it.

:noway: I refuse to comment on this in a public forum. All I will say is, “Fascinating! Will never happen.”

Well, at least we are not forgotten. That’s the point of this exercise.

Oh, we are most certainly forgotten. Taiwan as a strategic stick with which to beat China, will never be forgotten.

I identify with the locals, as I am married to one, have fathered 2, and have a great part of my destiny hung up on this place.

Obviously Tom Tancredo has been lobbied by any number to Forumosa Lobby Groups in the USA. I wonder how many ROC nationals even live in his state of Colorado
Obviously Tom Tancredo has been lobbied by any number to Forumosa Lobby Groups in the USA. I wonder how many ROC nationals even live in his state of Colorado
Maybe the guy just simply chooses Democratic values over Communism, just like AC_DROPOUT with your US passport. HOWEVER, unlike you, this guy is not a flaming hypocrite with a self esteem problem trying to force something upon others he wouldn’t subject himself too. Forcing Independent Taiwan to unite with your motherland won’t make your little wee wee any longer. Believe in yourself, China has a great history, you don’t need Taiwan to be great!

AC, either give up your US and ROC passports and exchange them for a PRC passport or shut the f*(k up. Stop pushing unification on this democratic and free nation. Move to the PRC if you like it so much and don’t forget to pick up your PRC passport on the way there. I am so sick of you and your hypocracy pushing unification on Taiwan when you would not yourself live in the PRC and give up your US passport. DAMN HYPOCRITE!

Well said.

Hobart,

You definitely have issues in ROC, I can tell. There are many voting citizens of ROC that are interested in eventual unification. Sorry they don’t agree with you, even after you married a ROC citizen.

Why don’t you give up your foriegn passport if you really believe ROC can be independent or soveriegn much longer. You can do the conscription and fight the fight most people on ROC thinks is useless. We rather have USA citizens die for our military campaign you know.

Why are you asking the USA to recognize you if you don’t live in the USA nor a resident of Colorado. Sounds like “democracy” has issues if Senators can be bought by lobby groups half a world away with no significant amount of ROC nationals in his district.

Can someone help me with that saying which describes the peculiar truth that for example theives are the most paranoid about having their things stolen and assume everyone else is theif? Or that audulters are the ones most likely to think their spouse might be chating on them.

Hey AC: It is funny to see how many old school KMTers are the first to scream out that someone else is taking a bribe.

Hobart,

I think the more elegant statement is that “People see the world as a mirror of themselves.” Shrinks call it “Self Projection” I believe.

It is the DPP that ran on the platform of reform and anti-black gold. Yet once they get into power it is the first thing they wish to master, self enrichment.

But after 4 years in power the DPP is still not able to forward any of their foriegn policy on the Strait Issue.

:unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Remember, if Taiwan is annexed by China, your willy won’t grow bigger.

Mr He,

And neither will yours. hahahaha.

Politics and willies don’t mix.

AC, the DPP has been unable to push forward on their policies in a number of areas primarily down to one reason, the Legislative Yuan is controlled by the Blues, and they scupper just about everything, even if it would be good for Taiwan. Hopefully that situation will be changed at the end of this year when the death knell for the KMT is sounded loud and clear.

At least I don’t have a complex.
