I want to buy a satellite messenger to use in Taiwan. I’ve contacted both SPOT and Delorme and they assure me their products will work in Taiwan.
Is anyone using one of these kinds of devices here? What are your experience with them?
I’m almost sold on a Delorme inReach, but I’m wondering if the text messages really work as advertised. I’m often out in the mountains alone, and it would give me and my family peace of mind to have a way to communicate once I’m outside of cellphone signals. I’m on a motorcycle, so the chances of me falling and getting hurt are real. (yeah, I should ride with someone, but that’s another conversation)
A PLB is another option; but it’s kind of “I’m going to be dying soon if I don’t get help” and not so much “hey, my bike broke down and I’ll need to sleep out here overnight. Don’t worry honey, I’m OK. Don’t send help. see you in the morning”. Certainly the best to have in a life or death situation. But not so useful otherwise.
