Uzbek surrogate mom scandal -- holy crap, I know that lady!

Always disconcerting to see someone you know on the front page of the Apple Daily:

I’m editing this to reflect a more accurate translation: three businessmen were allegedly bringing in women from Uzbekistan to serve as surrogate mothers; and surrogate motherhood is (I’m surprised to learn) illegal in Taiwan. One of the women turned up as positive for HIV, so one of the businessmen persuaded his ex-wife, “Rita”, to pretend she was that woman and request another test. When the test came up negative, authorities investigated the discrepancy and the whole jig was up.

But the point is – holy crap! I know “Rita.” She used to work at Malibu on Jen Ai Circle. She told me she was from Azerbaijan, not Uzbekistan, but one way or another I was always a little curious how a white woman from Central Asia ended up in Taiwan.

Gee…Human Trafficking in Taiwan?
Selling babies?

This story has legs!

Damn Uzbeks giving us foreigners a bad name.

Bad name or no, a few locals would still pay good money for a baby that looks like yours, though.

At least Mother Russia cares (4:12).

Taiwanese probed on suspicion of importing Uzbek surrogate mothers

Looking at the new report about it TV atm.

So apparently a married guy named Kuo wanted a blond child because they’re “cute” like a doll so he told his cousin to get him a blond foreign bride. Since he (Kuo) was already married he had his cousin marry the girl (Rita) and had her artificially inseminated with his semen. After she gave birth the cousin kicked her outta the house and she’s been working in Taiwan ever since to be close to her daughter.

Unfortunately 1 kid wasn’t enough and like all douche bags they like to taint the human gene-pool so him and his cousin roped in 3 more women and had 3 more children. They then registered the new kids under Rita’s name saying that they were her children without her knowledge. They were finally busted when the latest girl tested positive for HIV and they checked Rita’s medical records with the new girl.

When I knew her, “Rita” did mention she had children – I think she did mention a daughter – and she looked really sad about it. But I had no idea just how sad the situation really was. If Qrap’s description is right, then I feel awful for her.

The English news article said she’s in an “immigrant shelter” – is that just a fancy word for jail, pending deportation?

You hear a lot of sick stories, but there’s something particularly offhandedly callous and insane about this one.

I feel sorry for this woman. Any word on what the guys are facing?

I am afraid so. She’d be deported.
And according to the news, yesterday was the first time Rita to see her daughter again.
Apparently,Rita knew what the whole deal was about before she agreed to do so. She was paid about USD30K. However after her daughter was born, she regreted as she didn’t want to leave her baby. But at that time her visa was going to expire so she could only return to her country. Somehow she managed herself to come back again (not sure her visa status, probably just holding visitor visa) trying to see her daughter. However her “paper” husband refused to do so, only agreed Rita to see her through web cam. So actually yesterday was the first time Rita to see her daughter agagin after one year seperation.

And it’s only one business man(the investor of doctor and pharmacist’s clinics) while the other two men, one (Kuo,47) worked as a doctor(already resigned from the hospital) and the other (Lian,38, Kuo’s brother in law) is a pharmacist.

And why Uzbek in the story? Because that business man ever married two women from Uzbek and had beautiful “doll” babies years ago.
Kuo wanted too but he was married and could not get a divorce(as his wife refused to)…hence a ridiculous scandal was born.

Jail terms for violation of forging documents, and also against Genetic Health Act, by which it says surrogate is not permitted in this country.

What’s a bit weird to me in this whole scenario is how one party could think that he could have blonde kids. Like it’s that simple. It seems to me that the pharmacist would have had one or two biology classes that explained that dominant features tend to be more likely. * shugs shoulders*

yes that was also bugging me when I read the story, seems like it may go even deeper if they are really “blond boys” i wonder if this is an exaggeration and really the hair is “mouse brown”, but that’s blond enough? otherwise it’s beginning to sound more like they were impregnated in uzbek and smuggled over to pretend to give birth to the guys offspring

also sounds like the Dr must be really arrogant, or the bottom has not been reached since he must’ve been earning a pretty penny and i would’ve thought it would take a bigger scandel to get him involved?

It’s probably mouse brown, or even not-quite-black, but that’s blond enough in Taiwan. I’m white, but with what is considered black hair in the West (it’s very dark brown, actually). Nevertheless, my Korean, Japanese, and Chinese friends would refer to my golden hair, or say it was yellow. It’s true that it is long, and from swimming the ends are paler, but still.

By the way, what is going to happen to the children? Honestly, this story is heart-breaking.

Good point, but it’s hard to say as the situation is really complicated.
Among those 5 babies born by different women, it is reported only one was born during the legal marriage relationship (I think it’s referred to that business man’s first child ) , so I assume that one probably would be fine.
However the rest would be illegitimate children.
I am not sure who’d take care of them at the moment as their bio mother would be deported soon, and their bio father currently is in deep trouble too. But I guess later on this case would refer to the local social care authority as well in view of the benefit for those children. If so, the adoption is likely to happen next.

Though I hate to say this.
But this kind of thing is nothing new and it could happen in S.Korea, Japan or any place in the world. Just this time, the people involved in the story are from Uzbek.

And yes…it’s really sad…

There’d be no question of the children’s citizenship, is there? I’m not sure if it’s like the US where if you’re born on the country’s soil you’re a citizen, no questions asked. Horrible to think babies would be deported.

So now they are reporting what I first kind of thought when I saw the guys’ photos. The three men lived together and the police found gay porn in their place. Their sexual orientation is purely speculation, of course, since straight, single men in their late 30s-40s always prefer to live with other men, love having mixed-raced kids as the ultimate fashion accessorry, and when they decide to have babies the surrogate way, they always use the turkey baster method, rather than good old-fashioned intercourse. Yup, just sounds like every straight guy out there.
