I’m been told by my school that the NIA requires my BA to be verified and that I have to do all the running around. The school has also told me that the NIA is now checking 20% of all certificates. Is anyone else out there currently being told the same thing?
Only fair, I’d have thought. We all know how easy it is to print an authentic-looking fake and I assume the NIA does, too.
moccha,
Please post the details on what you have to do to get your degree verified as it will probably be a big help to others in your situation. As the NIA is very new, there’s lots of changes like this that are beyond anyone’s previous experience.

The NIA in Taichung seem to be under the impression that they are only responsible for issuing visas/re-entry permits and ARCs. According to them, the CLA are still handling the issuing of work permits,
“Ministry of Labor”?? I believe that the correct nomenclature is “Council of Labor Affairs” … or “CLA” for short.

Sorry its taken me so long to reply. I’m presently overseas on a beach (yippee). I think the school told me NIA, I was gobsmacked at the time. I had only ever spoken with one person who’s had a check. Regardless of which office it is, I still have to get it verified which is a real pain as I only have two weeks in which to do it after I return. I was told all this the day before I left and whichever office it is, has given me hardly any time to complete it.
The CLA does the verification themselves. I know this because a friend of mine was just popped for a fake diploma. She had been using it for years, but during a recent work permit application they decided to verify it by contacting the university, which had no record of her.
This just happened a few days ago, so no one is sure what will happen to her. Anyone have any thoughts? Will it be deportation? A fine? Or, just a refusal of her work permit?
How about “All of the above”?
What I would like to know is whether or not this issue is based on nationality. At first only SA teachers were asked to do it. Is it still the case?
zoidberg: that’s what I thought too. She is under the false impression/delusion that she will just be able to sign up for chinese classes now for her visa and everything will be honky dorey. I think she should split immediately before the fines and deportation stamp ball gets rolling.
aaf: she’s Canadian, so I guess it’s more that just SA.
EDIT: I tried to reconfirm that the agency in charge had actually contacted the university and got a different story this time. It is HER RESPONSABILITY to obtain a transcript from the school. Which, of course, she won’t be able to do. So, she thinks that she will drop the application, leave the country for a bit and then come back on a student visa.
Which if the CLA really thought about it, is also not much different than their previous “system” of verification. Prove it is Real, but they don’t have to prove it is Fake? One phone call?
The sad point, is the Fake degrees look better than the originals, and if the Fakes have made it through for so long, what’s to stop someone from creating similarily crafted transcripts?
…just say’in…
Many are shitting bricks, I am sure, as the “verification” process is still in it’s infancy. The CLA is flexing its’ muscles, but there are still a lot of bugs.
It’s unfortunate that some great teachers will get the boot, as the degree says nothing of their teaching ability, yet at the same time…it will also get rid of some of the not so stellar elements.
Consistency has not been the strong point from the CLA. [Having battled mulitple layers of stupidity and obstinancy in the past]…and that was not on degree related matters. Try getting them to fix their own mistakes?
Drown em with paper work, baffle em with BS, and remember you are only dealing at first with one peon in the puzzle.
Toodles off …to request transcripts so I don’t have to hustle like a madman at the next work permit application.
