Following today’s televised debate, Brian Hioe has posted a summary of what he saw:

One takeaway for me was this observation, not from Hioe but from Michael Fahey posting on the site formerly know as twitter:

[KMT VP candidate and noted deep blue figure] Jaw Shaw-kong is incessantly insinuating that [HBK] is in fact an American. It’s a shame that [Hsiao], who grew in an era when Amerasians were bullied merciless, has to put up with this insulting and disrespectful attack on her ethnic heritage in today’s Taiwan.

The ethnonationalist underpinnings of Jaw’s comments (which are not isolated but are part of a broader discourse pattern with the KMT this election cycle) are clear: only figures deemed to be “pure Chinese” are suited to govern this place. If white nationalism is Bad News in the west, this obnoxious expression of Chinese nationalism is similarly Bad News in multiethnic Taiwan.
