Video Cam ripping programs~

Hey guys, I have a Sony Digital Video Cam (can’t remember model#)… it uses digital tape as it’s a couple of years old…

anyway, I know it has an IEEE port which I can use to connect to my pc’s usb port… but what program(s) do I need to get the stuff off of the tape and onto the pc?

I plan on taping it to my bike tomorrow if it will stick and taking a ride up through the twisties…

I need to borrow your camera!!!

I have lots of 8mm and Hi8 tapes that I need to transfer to digital, and your camera is the one I’m looking for.

What would it take to get you to lend it to me for a few days? Or I’ll buy it if want to sell it (at a good price).

Let me know … please! I shopped for hours all over the camera store area near ShiMenDing last week trying to find that model. :s

And I can transfer your vids to DVD for you if you like.

You can use videomaker or whatever it’s called that comes with windows. There’s some application somewhere that can do it.

Who are you responding to?
Who are you responding to?
Who are you asking ?

I’m responding to the guy who was asking for the name of a program, that’s why my answer contained the name of a program. While you want hardware. Although maybe you could use it too if you found something to play your tapes on.

BFM > Windows Video Maker~ Hmmm… great idea except it’s all in Chinese :s Is there any way I can convert it to English? or will it simply record for me off the tape and then I can use something else for editing? I’ve got Sony Vegas somewhere, but when I tried it out once, it seemed quite difficult to use~ Gotta find me a ‘Vegas for Dummies’ book or something

Stray Dog > I’d need some kinda guarantee that I’d get it back~ No offense to you, but I’ve had too much stuff jacked over the years when I’ve lent it to people who conveniently disappear… Apart from that, if you can get your ass to Taichung for pick-up and delivery… not a problem…

A pretty good explanation can be found here:

Stray Dog, do you still have the Hi8 camcorder? If so, you don’t necessarily need a Digital8 camcorder. Most MiniDV cams can take analogue video and audio input, digitise it and transfer it to the PC via FireWire (or record it on MiniDV tapes). I did this with a few Hi8 tapes (long ago) and was quite pleased with the results (using an S-Video cable), though a suitable Digital8 cam is said to produce even better quality. However, I’m not sure if this would work with an NTSC MiniDV cam and PAL Hi8 tapes (should this be the case).

Ok~ reading that post, I think there perhaps may be some confusion as to what my camcorder is~ so I checked…

It’s a Sony DCR-PC101… NTSC MiniDV

and crap~ IEEE (Firewire, thanks for the link)…doesn’t connect to USB… that’s just a USB cable with a different end… which I can’t use to transfer…

looks like I’m gunna hafta take the tape to the shop, ask them to put it on CD for me… then rip it onto the HDD :s or go and buy me a firewire card for my PC… or do it on my laptop~

x08 Of course I would leave a deposit or something - I’ve lost too many things myself. But, seeing as you’re in Taichung, I can’t see it happening any time soon, but thank you anyway.

hypermegaglobal Thanks for the tips. I’ll have a go at finding a solution that way too.

Though, right now I’m considering just giving them to a shop to do … I’d have to erase the embarrassing stuff first, though. And it would probably be expensive, but right now I’d be looking at buying at least a second-hand digicam or other old camera anyway, so it might actually be cheaper.

Windows Movie Maker

After all this worry~ I need to figure out a better way to mount the camera to the bike first :s It couldn’t see over the guages… ahahahah

Stray Dog > It shouldn’t be too expensive I would think… last time I got my miniDV’s turned to VCDs, it was 200NT a pop~ not bad really…
