Yes, you do need to get a visa to travel to Vietnam. I went to Hanoi last year and got mine through my travel agent first for about US$50 or so as I remember (maybe a bit less, I’ve forgotten). I had a travel agent like that once, I was her best customer. To keep me happy she even became my girlfriend - what a idiot I was. 
When my travelling days were dwindling she vanished.
