I totally agree here. I’ve been wanting to start a thread pointing out this issue for a while. I suppose if the one who has the title isn’t bothered by it then it’s fine, but I think it’s misleading (to new users), his posts stick out as some of my current favorites. Who gets to decide who get titled V.I.? I don’t like that the current VI is ranked VI, but like I said, if says it doesn’t bother him, then I’ll be unbothered.
I propose that the member who appears on the ‘ignore’ list of the most members be given the coveted title of Village Idiot. We should choose our Idiot in a democratic way, since it’s a most noteworthy position.
I’m bothered up and down all over the place. However I am also deeply touched and warmed up too that my dear friends here would take time out of their busy lives to come to my defense. Is there a “wipe the tear from your eye smilie”?

I agree with Neo. Whether a small group or a large one gives the “Village Idiot” title, it seems to me like a plain, old-fashioned case of a group picking on an individual.
That is obviously out of date. I don’t recall agreeing or even discussing whether the person now having the VI status deserved such status. I certainly would not have agreed to something so juvenile.

Only Gus and I are capable of bestowing the title of Village Idiot upon anyone. Any Village Idiots that have been “outed” in the past year have been done so by yours truly.
I’ll admit to a certain ambivalence with regard to my status as village idiot. The confident, mischevious side relishes the title as it seems to bring out the free form, theatrical side of my personality. And it is a coveted position I realize since it calls for a certain comic profundity to be at least attempted, if not in fact displayed. One would certainly be ill advised to attempt the role without being intimately aquainted with one’s inner retard that is for certain. It is however an intimacy that is not without it’s hazards. As we have seen some never again quite manage to surface from the quagmire of such a relationship. See Peking Spring for example of this. Now there is one commited retard. Might I suggest that the title be reserved solely for such accomplished examples such as he?

Think of it as an honor (of a dubious nature, but an honor nonetheless). Not many people get bestowed with it. The best the rest of us intellectual plebeians can manage are the rankings that come with the number of posts we have made. No recognition that reflects on our talents to motivate, confound, or annoy the masses. Not many people can strike the delicate balance between outrageous posts and just plain getting banned the way our village idiots do.
