Virtual Stock Market Mirror. Place your bets

I’m giving you 70, 000 USD. It’s enough for a cash down on a house, but you’re smarter than that. The stock market is where money is made. Alright… Now put your money where your mouth is.(virtually)

Here are the rules.

1-When investing in a corporation, you have to specify which one it is and you have to post a link to help identify the stock. Tell us why you think it’s a winner.

2- You have to post your results every three months or more frequently if you want. With links. Bets that are not updated within three months will be considered lost investments for the sake of this exercise. If you want to post here, you shouldn’t expect other posters to search for your results. Keep up with your bets.

This is the kind of thread that may generate a good discussion a year or two from now once we can assess what we did with our money. So be patient.

Me… I don’t have a clue. What should I do with my 70, 000? I’m thinking it would make for a good cash down on a house but I’m VERY open to suggestions since this is only virtual investment.

How about this:

Charlie Phillips, a belated doff of the cap. I’ve been meaning to thank you for your concise and relevant input for sometime.

I will check this out when I get time. Alas my work load is mental at present, and have hell through till the end of May, and a fair bit of work travel (and while that sounds like a jaunt, it requires a shedload of preparation) ahead.

Robin, keeping in mind today’s 10% correction on Tepco would still mean you’re up 55% in a month on my call. Still, if all I had was US$70k, i wouldn’t have backed a melting nuke with all of that! Clearly!

And why was that correction so low today anyway? That nuke went to 7, and it had been stock limit up two days running. I was really expecting a hit today. Thus my caution in another thread before markets opened this morning.

Longer term, i would, really off the top of my head, pick Oz uranium stock, Palladin Energy. Too tired to look at what’s happened with the Oz dollar, but that could offfer a dual bonus. Not the full 70k, but one egg in your basket. http://www.google.com/finance?q=ASX:PDN

Charlie, you’re totally screwing my thread. But this is awesome! I’m in!

I’m not sure if I set it up right or if the best system to use, but I’ve been using Investopedia as a stock simulator for a few months and thought there must be a free system for playing this kind of game. Check it out and see if you like it. It only took a few minutes to set up. If anyone wants to change it, it’s easy enough to set up a new game with various rules. Maybe there’s a better system? How about we set up a starting date and then we can all prepare for the start of play?

For example, I set this one up to allow for margin trading, but I don’t know if that was a good idea. Also there might be a better system out there and it’s getting late so I don’t want to do more research on it tonight.

I’ve been making pretty much 30%, reliably year on year for the past several years by staying clear of the stock market. I’m not sure I want to be risking my money on a titanic adventure.

Charlie,

The minimum trade price of 2.00 is set too high. Can you change it to 0.01? I can’t get in on many trades because of this minimum trade price.

Done.

Sweet! Thanks.

I think I’m going to invest in wind power to begin with. This is fun!

I bought some solar. I’ll buy a few more stocks before the market opens tonight.

The market is open ding ding ding ding ding ding ding.

I’ve taken positions on: Google, First Solar, Sony, Taiwan Semiconductor, Baidu, Sanyo, Konami, Nippon T&T, Electronic Arts, Activision, Wacoal, Powersecure International.

Come and have some fun and learn about investing in the stock market. The game only lasts 2 years, so get in early, and if you learn something, you can start using real money after the game is over.

More fun than an MBA. :discodance:

I’ve been trying to buy certain shares for days now and it’s not working. I have to rethink my investments and invest in something else. I’ve been busy but I do check on my portfolio every day.

I see xtrain has joined the game. He dominated the game for the first day or two and now I rank first. It changes fast, though.

What’s interesting is that all of us lost money so far. We have 70,000 US to work with and we have not managed to make one buck. We all lost money so far. Charlie and I have been in the red for days.

Since the game started, however, I’m totally in the green with my mortgage. Things are on the up, not down.

Anny suggestions? What should I invest in? I still have well over 60K to risk.

Buy and hold. It’s good you still have plenty of money in your account. If the market goes up, you will profit from your existing stocks, and if the market goes down, you have cash to invest in bargain stocks.

2 years to go.

Any chance of getting futures/forex in this vse game?

How about options?
Buy and hold.
Google is chewing my equity. I need to offset that somehow if I’m going to hold.

Welcome to the game, Homey, and good luck!

Google is a good brand. They got knocked around by missing their profit estimate and everybody’s blaming poor old Larry Page coz he’s a tech, not a corporate. But compared to its price a few months ago, you bought it at a bargain.

By the way, IMHO, your portfolio is not very well diversified. BIDU has been the darling of the market for a long time, but how far can it go? Google is locked out of the China market but can deal with the global economy. Can Chinese companies like BIDU do the same?

Plus, if the market crashes tomorrow, you don’t have any cash for the bargain basement. :2cents:

I bet high on BIDU because I’m trying to make a buck fast. I’m focused on getting the 200$ I lost elsewhere already. If I’m up tomorrow, I’m selling. Call it day trading in the sand box if you will.

Something wrong with the system–I’ve twice “canceled” purchases within a minute of making them, only to see that they went through anyways??
