My wife says she saw something on the news that it might be more complicated.
One advantage to being a foreigner here. Usually they donât bother to hand out flyers; when somebody, usually after hesitating, looks like theyâre going to give me one, I just shrug and grin helplessly. I sometimes insist on getting a political one, for the look of shock on the person handing it out.
I had one girl get mad at me for ignoring her handing out flyers. Said very loudly to me âä˝ č˝ä¸ćĺ?!â (you donât understand?!) in a loud and rude voice. Normally I just say no thanks when they try to hand me flyers, but when itâs the same shop doing this for years every time I go by and slightly walking in my way every time I was just too tired to even say anything that day.
I loved my American friendâs way of thinking: When someone here would hand him a flyer and say something in Chinese, he would always translate it in his head as, âPlease throw this away for me.â 
They always give me political ones. I guess they figure Iâll tell my friends.

Nabbed the only outside seat at my local Louisa where there is a no smoking sign. As Iâm dusting the stray cigarette ash off the chair with the back of my hand, I notice a used plastic tooth cleaner thingo lying there on the table, just staring back up at me in all of its grotesqueness.
Why is the outside seat always the grubby smokerâs den in Taiwan? It seems like there is some unstated socioeconomic divide between the outside and inside seating in most cafes.
Probably because the smoke will keep away the mosquitoes, so mostly the smokers will actually want to sit outside
