Locals stand in front of open doors on the MRT. I don’t understand this. Doors are open. People going into the trains, but there’s always several people that go to the front of the open door and just stand there.

I can’t tell the station or direction, but isn’t that normally when they’re waiting for the train that goes all the way, like to Xiangshan rather than Da’an or Tamsui rather than Beitou?

This is Tamsui station.

I guess that wouldn’t make sense then?

Revised explanation: People are weird/stupid/annoying.

Usually when I see that it’s a busy time of day, and the seats are full, and they’re waiting to be first on for the next train in order to get a seat. The other platform is either already too busy, or perhaps not in service.

I assume there are also other reasons, like waiting for someone.

Nixon moonlighting.

It had free seats when I got on.

Could be waiting to catch Xiangshan train rather than Da’an.

And not just one person waiting, judging by your photo? Yeah, I don’t get that.

Unless you mean there were free seats at the far end of the platform, not where they’re waiting? After all, that other end of the platform is a LONG way! Wouldn’t want to walk that far!

Random guesses: waiting for people; they’re oddly picky about what seats they choose; they’re early for their destination and figure waiting on the Danshui platform is more comfortable than waiting near their destination. Only the first of which makes much sense to me.

Don’t get it either but whatever they’re doing I really wish they would stand to one f*&king side when they decide they don’t want to get on the train that’s just arrived, whatever their reason…

I’ve sometimes found it hard to signal this. I’m in line, but I want the Danshui train, not the Beitou train, so I shuffle to the side but try to otherwise stay at the front of the line … and the queue behind me shuffles over too, apparently not understanding what I’m doing, until the dam breaks and everyone behind me goes around me. Which was the intent the whole time!

AFAIK all trains to Da’an start from Beitou.

I mean, that’s exactly what I said originally, isn’t it?

I thought your point above was that the Tamsui train always goes to Xiangshan and it’s only the Beitou train that stops in Da’an. I vaguely thought that was the case, but I don’t often take the red line that far so wasn’t sure of it.

If only I did public transport I could get involved in this discussion.

Hot take maybe, nothing about this is wack. It basically doesn’t affect anyone. If it really bothers you that much, you should go up to them and politely ask why they are doing it instead of stealthily taking pictures of people minding their own business.

We really need someone who lives in Danshui and is constantly using the red line to answer our questions with an accurate and informative post. :kissing_cat:

I’m guessing they’re probably waiting for the other train that goes to New Beitou (新北投) or if that train goes to New Beitou, then they’re waiting for the one that goes to Xiangshan? It’s the same concept when waiting on the Orange Line where the line splits to 2 directions in 大橋頭(Dàqiáo tóu), one to 蘆洲(Luzhou) and the other one to 迴龍(HuiLong).

Not possible.
Trains from Danshui Station only go to Xiangshan. They cannot go to Xinbeitou or terminate in Daan.

I’m curious then.. If one needs to go to Xinbeitou, which station should one board the train from?
