Wack Things in Taiwan 2025

Anyone else who doesn’t ‘clean’ their bowl?

I’m sorry but i find it disgusting. The rice in that little bowl just sits underneath all various food you eat and the bits at the bottom just become grubbier and grubbier. And its also pretty difficult to pick up with chopsticks.

I never have a problem finishing all my food from a plate, but those rice bowls? sorry, I don’t care if i am disrespecting the farmers. And that goes twice for hot pot.

**Police Leave Gun and Ammunition at Resident’s Home After Search

A bizarre incident occurred in Penghu, Taiwan, where police officers left a bag containing a gun and ammunition at a resident’s home after conducting a search. The resident, surnamed Zhuang, reported the incident to the police station, claiming he had “found” the bag.

According to reports, Zhuang’s brother discovered the bag on a chair in the living room after the police had left. The bag contained a PPQ handgun, 24 rounds of ammunition, a search warrant, a wireless radio, and a small computer. Zhuang’s brother felt suspicious and decided to report the incident to the police.

However, when Zhuang’s brother first called the police station to report the incident, the officer on duty thought he was joking and told him to bring the bag to the station himself. Zhuang’s brother had to call again to report the incident, and the officer still seemed skeptical, suggesting that he report the incident to a different police station.

After some argument, Zhuang’s brother decided to bring the bag to the police station, where the officers were shocked to discover that the bag indeed belonged to the police. The police had conducted a search of Zhuang’s home earlier that day, suspecting that he possessed firearms. However, they had left the bag behind, which was later discovered by Zhuang’s brother.

The police returned the bag to the station, but Zhuang’s brother requested a receipt to prove that he had turned in the bag. The police eventually issued a receipt, and the incident was closed. However, Zhuang’s brother expressed concerns that there might be “aftereffects” from the incident, implying that the police’s mistake could have serious consequences.

An update from 2023, when @bdog posted this:

Yahoo is running something online saying [a baboon which had escaped from Leofoo Park in Hsinchu and shot in Taoyuan] died. I’m watching regular TV news now, still haven’t seen anything on air yet though.

Edit: tv news just confirmed it died.

Apparently if you’re a public official who has ordered a hunter to shoot a baboon in Taoyuan, there may be legal consequences:

This was not Taoyuan’s finest hour(s). :slightly_frowning_face:

Seems a bit harsh, no?

Poor baboon. He just wanted a little run around.

But if you kill someone whilst driving drunk, you only get 6 months.

Woman detained for cooking dumplings at Taiwan train station | Taiwan News | Feb. 15, 2025 12:45

I didn’t know you could only charge cellphones/computers, but also, it would have never crossed my mind to cook there. :joy:

At all you can eat buffets, why do people load up their plates until there is a huge pile of food? And just all kinds of different foods that don’t really compliment each other. I feel it’s worse here than back home.

Customary way to eat here is to have many different dishes from where to pick portions into your own rice bowl. So mixing different dishes is the way to go for them.

Next step: set up a freezer there, plug it in, and use it store frozen dumplings! So smart, Taiwan Rail can pay for the electricity!

Probably a homeless person which they omit to mention.

A reasonable hypothesis, but in the news reports showing her and video of her arguing with Taiwan Rail staff . . . I dunno she does not look homeless to me. :person_shrugging:

I think she’s a trendsetter.

Charged with larceny for stealing electricity.
Probably not commutable to a fine. Looks like she’ll be making bags in prison.
:eyes:

Based on my cursory knowledge of laws in Taiwan, I was under the impression than just about any crime is commutable to a fine. Run someone over and kill them while recklessly driving? NT$6000 maybe! Cooking dumplings in a Taiwan Rail Station? We’ll see what the judge decides!

Maybe the laws have changed, but back in my day drunk driving was commutable to a fine. I knew quite a few foreigners who did it. Extremely common in Taiwan for both locals and expats alike.

It’s still a fine, but the difference from 20 years ago is the amount to pay. It was a laughable tiny amount before so nobody cared, then they increased it a lot so people started to pay taxi drivers to drive their car home after dinners. So it really improved.

Note, I don’t remember the exact fine number, so instead of guessing on amounts I leave them out
