Waking up with a headache (often)

washing the screens myself every few months and then annually by a professional made a huge difference. the black gunk they wash out was horrifying. I definitely feel better.

I too have a deviated septum, similar dimensions to yours. Not at all impressed by the surgical option. And i did get terrible sinusitis when first in Taipei. Every time I came I would end up with massive headaches, but all day long. Eventually cleared up with large doses of nasty antibiotics (rifampicin) but adopting the indian trick of netti helped immensely.

invest in a netti pot (you can get plastic squeeze bottles in some pharmacies), and about 500 mL of saline flushed daily through the nose really helped with the headaches.
It’s pretty common for me to wake up with a headache nearly every day, in recent weeks.

It kinda lifts as the days goes on, but it’s still problematic.

I have a deviated septum and snore (according to my gf).

I wonder if it could be sleep apnea, and not getting enough oxygen when sleeping?

Your thoughts?
Is this a chronic problem? Have you been overweight for a long time?

When I don’t use my CPAP and I suffer a headache related to my apnea, by late afternoon, the headache is finally gone. Waste of time and drags down whatever I’m trying to do during the day.

Unfortunately, these days, scheduling a sleep test for apnea takes 4 to 6 months! Used to be that I would fly in to Taipei and book an appointment for a sleep test the next day (and I’d be the only patient at the sleep lab). So, while you are figuring out what is causing your headaches, I suggest booking time with a sleep doctor (he or she could be a neurologist or pulmonologists who specializes in sleep apnea - over the years, I’ve seen both kinds. I’ve only been to the sleep labs at NTUH and TMUH). Usually, the advice is the same: lose the weight, exercise regularly, and sleep earlier and longer (with the CPAP)

WebMD says an ounce per pound of body weight. For an average 200lb man, almost six liters per day.

…The probably-too-obvious question: are you dehydrated? (With less subtlety: what colour is your pee?)
Try living in Malaysia. I get dehydrated weekly. you just can’t drink enough to stay hydrated especially at night unless you set an alarm to wake up and drink.
What gets me is when I go back to Vancouver, usually in July. There are a few days of ā€œpee-lagā€, when I’m still drinking at Taipei summer levels and yet sweating at Vancouver levels. And I wonder why I’m suddenly going to the toilet every thirty minutes.

On water amounts: the eight-cups-a-day piece of advice has no scientific value to it. As best I can tell, the ā€œgoalā€ should be urine with a trace of yellow. Glowing like one of the smileys appearing at the side of my screen right now? You’ve got a problem. Clear as a mountain spring? You’re overdoing the hydration, which isn’t really a problem, but all those toilet trips can be a hassle.

There could be lots of problems really - dehydration, lack of sleep, poor quality sleep, poor air. Is sleeping with air conditioning new for you? For many years I used a fan, until my spouse forced the change. It took a while to get used to. A few years ago I also started wearing earplugs every night, and that improved my sleep quality significantly (after the first few days of discomfort).

And yeah, as others have said, see a doctor, especially if it’s serious.
There are probably more salts and other minerals in Canada’s water and especially food which keep more water in.
Drinking water only might not be the best solution for replacing lost fluids.
While living in Spain, my spanish friends always said " It’s too hot more salt more salt.

My sugestion, I should do it myself by the way, add a little salt to the drinking water. The tip of a teaspoon per 2 liters.

Fuck me, you think 200 lbs is Average?

and don’t believe everything you read on the web, BTW.

I did use a saline squeeze bottle for a while, with some effect.

I’d say I’m marginally overweight - 1.87m/90kg.

Problem seems to be achieving deep, continuous sleep.

194.7lb average in the US, 177lb average in Canada.
Just about 200lb. I’m 198lb and leaner than almost everyone I know.
Of course Africans and Asians are going to be lighter.

You can’t believe everything online, but peer reviewed medical literature is probably safe to trust.

That’s 5—6 liters per day just like I said.

Something like these would be fine for anyone consuming more water than they are used to.

Pramipexole works great for short term sleeping issues for me. Safer than benzos or hypnotics, too. Just start the dose low, maybe 0.25mg and slowly work up if needed. Going too high too fast results in horrible nause. Some people get insomnia from Pramipexole, so you’ll have to see how you react.

Regular exercise will help as well.

Come to think of it I think it’s a combo of pollution, AC, poor ventilation and poor breathing while sleeping.

I was back in South Africa a few weeks back, and ran no AC, the air was unpolluted, I had the windows open at night for ventilation (yes, it’s possible in SA, despite the crime) and my overall breathing and morning headaches were mostly non-existent.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m more or less going to be in Asia for plenty of time ahead (already 13 years on the clock), I just need to find a city/location where the pollution aint an issue.

If you have NHI, why not go in one night for a sleep test?

I still think moderate to heavy exercise and more water will help a lot.

It is probably with your sleeping habit. Lack of sleep will make you feel tired and experience headache. Study shows good sleep prevents people from headache and migraine.
You can also consider proper treatment or medication like butalbital online for your headache.

Some triggers of headache are environment and food. Commonly by foods that contain nitrites(hot dogs, deli meats), tannis (tea, apple juice, pears), Monosoduim glutamate (MSG), caffeine (coffee, tea) and others.

If the doctor send you to it, it is free -which is a bargain as spending the night in the hospital with a lot of wires stuck to you on a paid exam by yourself can be quite several thousand nts.

Since turning off the AC at night the headaches have reduced somewhat.

Still think I aint getting enough oxygen in at night (nor during the day for that matter)

I wake up with headaches pretty much once a week. Four years ago I had some serious health issue and after being hospitalized for a couple of weeks,
NTUH could not really determent the underlying cause for my problem.

Anyhow, I suspected some form of hidden diabetes, which they never checked for. They only did one onetouch sugar test.
So after my release, I went to a pharmacy and bought me one of the better onetouch devices, about 3000 to 4000NT$.
I measured all day for about 3 weeks, before and around every meal. The sugar curve were always within, what’s considered acceptable.
After 3 weeks of pinching my fingers up to 15 times, I ate three meals of potatoes salad at once and saw a little spike up to 165 and then back to 93.
I decided that my pancreas is ok and stopped looking into it.
I still was plagued by migraine auras and headaches about twice a week, I decided to regain my weight to where I was before I got sick and the auras disappeared but the headaches didn’t.

The headaches got worse the past year and I gained too much weight, so I decided to pull on the brakes. Big mistake.
I ended up in the emergency two times and got/am in serious health trouble right now.
The schools I work for forced me to come back or they fire me and I do not function fully.

Anyhow, I had terrible back pain, spasms, a tremor in my hands, face nerve paralysis, I cant run anymore since my legs don’t function, etc.
The Symptoms are improving day by day now and I think that I found the cause for all this.

When I got my nerves checked the DR asked me about Alcohol and diabetes since she saw the my peripheral nerves are dis-functioning.
I never drink Alcohol past 15 years. And for diabetes see above. Still I went home and started to check again and again.
Then one day,I come home from work really tired and craving for sugar. I take one of those breads my wife buys for herself.
I drink one cup of her low sugar bean milk with it. An 1/2 hour later my sugar went from 105 to 189. I measured three times, used the control liquid one more time and then went down to the pharmacy to buy a new box of stripes with the chips on it.
Those then showed 196. I then took a walk about 3Km and after coming back it was down to 81.

Here is the thing, I did not sleep for 5 days when I went to the emergency room. I did not sleep another 3 days maybe managed to lie down 1 hour but not sleep.
I started to get crazy and deeply paranoid. I only could sit or walk. I lost two toenails and the others were so bloody that my wife got scare when she saw the floor.
The 8th day or so I go an think let’s have breakfast at the place close to the park and then have my walk. I sit down and have a milktea with some bread.
Half way trough that sugary tea all my pain and cramps disappeared. I take a walk, go home and get 1,5 hours of real sleep. I thought it was the chair or the sunshine that gave me that break.
Another torture night and looking forward that chair the sun and the walk. Again, half way through the tea and I am fine.
This time I got three hours of sleep and managed to buy a bathtub.
Next day the same but I got suspicious about the sugar.

Now I tried the sugar tea for my headaches, I had 3 so far. It works. Before, I took 1000 of mg of painkiller and only managed to get to work half of the time.
All three times the headache disappeared half way trough the cup. The thing is when I woke up with a headache, I did not feel like eating and that was wrong.
Only when I had some crackers to protect my stomach< I managed to get to work.

By the way my wife reports snoring and strange breathing too.
