Do you remember how hopeful the world was back then?
Now we have walls popping up like flowers after a rain. Is the irony really lost on everyone? Walls once bad, are now good. They are a sign that victory is near. Feel better?
Iraqis find security wall is becoming real barrier

A US military project to wall off a Sunni Arab enclave in Baghdad evokes images of Israel’s West Bank barrier for many Iraqis who believe the plan will widen sectarian rifts tearing their capital asunder.
Physically sealing Adhamiya and other troubled areas may have a fleeting impact on the level of bloodshed, analysts said. But it will further fray the social fabric of a city that has ripped very roughly into a Shiite east and Sunni west.
“All of this is trying to find solutions to violence short of what is actually required, which is to find a political compromise between all the groups,” said Joost Hiltermann, a senior International Crisis Group analyst in Amman.
Sad to see walls going up in Israel but we’re talking about a relatively small area, and it is certainly nothing epic like the fall of the Berlin Wall.
As for hopes not being fulfilled, i wouldn’t say things have not been that bad. Apart from the stain of war and genocide in the former Yugoslavia, the expansion of free Europe has been a huge largely untold success story. It’s wonderful to see countries such as Romania and Poland - so long under the Soviet yoke - as democratic nations and members of the EU.
On a side note, it’s interesting to compare how Europe has managed to politically and economically integrate these countries with the United State’s relative lack of influence in Central America.
Don’t forget the wall between Mexico and the US.
Why remember it?
Its not big enough and the Pres will not enforce the laws on the books regarding illegal aliens invading the USA.
Don’t forget the wall between Mexico and the US.
Many countries have guarded borders. This is about walls splitting already existing communities, like in Berlin, N. Ireland and Cyprus, And now Baghdad and Israel.
Baghdad and Israel are one community? Man, I need to study more geography.
Why remember it? I dunno; it’s a wall being built, and I recall the topic being something about walls being built. There’s also a wall being built obstructing my view of Bitan from the MRT station. I don’t like it.
The country with the worst walls is that marsupial-infested arid wasteland known as Australia. West Australia has rabbit-proof fences that stretch right across the continent. There’s also a dingo fence in the East.
