do you know where in Taipei my girlfriend [a Taiwanese citizen] can get a certificate of single to prove that she is not married ?
I understand Taiwanese authorities are quite beaurocratic, so I think that it might be wise for her to get a certificate issued in taiwan
before flying to the UK.
We plan of getting married in Europe… and settling in the UK.
Assumedly its a piece of paper that would be provided by the government that indicates that you are not currently married. In Australia all that is required is that you “tick a box” on the marriage certificate declaring you are not married in any other country.
I assume by this it means that in the UK extra documentation is required?
Correct. If you marry in the UK then your fiancee does not require a Certificate of no Impediment, which is required in some other countries. Just a fiancee/marriage settlement visa which she must apply for in Taiwan.
When I wrote my post I wasn’t very well informed and I kept going in circles, then I found out like some of you have mentioned
that my fiance doesn’t need a certificate of single status to marry in the UK.
After hours and even days reading immigration forums and the UK Border Agency rules about immigration I felt that I had hit a
brick wall and that we would have a hard time getting a visa: you need to apply for a fiance visa and wait God knows how long so she could come and marry in the UK, mind you it is only valid for 6 months - after that comes the 2 year visa application, she would need to sit an english test and spend a lot of ££££££££££, bank statements to prove that we are self sufficient etc etc. After reading all that I almost felt like giving up lol, it’s really depressing!
All of a sudden darkness became light and I found out that if we marry outside of the UK, I can bring her to the UK under European legislation on my second European nationality on the basis that she is a family member (wife in this case) of an EEA citizen without hardly any hassle, saving hundreds in immigration fees, not to mention the waiting time…
So this is my latest update, we are going to get married this year in October or November time.
Thank you very much once again for all your comments and help
