Congratulations on your new job. As you have discovered Taoyuan is indeed a shithole but so are most cities in Taiwan. Anyway, settle in at your school, and save your money.

Entertainment suggestions

  1. Drinking (but not in pubs unless you want to meet new folks)
  2. Buy a second-hand scooter and explore the countryside, especially the mountains.
  3. Visit Taipei. There are plenty of interesting places to explore.
  4. Get a girlfriend :wink:

I second the motion to change the title of this thread.
I only clicked in it by accident and I would have followed it from the beginning if I’d known it was about the falling demand for teachers.

When I saw the title of this thread I assumed (foolishly!) that it was about how to handle the topic of war in the classroom, students’ attitudes to it etc.

Please, change the title - or give it a subtitle; ‘War - undercutting teachers’. Something like that.
